Intel today released the much awaited fix for the "8 MB bug" (BAD_CTX 0000013x error) affecting some 320 Series solid state drives, which it announced it was looking into, back in July. The fix comes as a firmware update, version 1.9. The bug is caused by an unexpected power loss, which causes the drive to stop seeing data above 8 MB, resulting in a data loss. Intel fixed this bug with a new firmware update, which can by run by downloading the disk image (.iso file), burning it onto a blank CD, and booting from it. The firmware update can be downloaded from this page.

Looks like people who had this drive, suffered a power outage, it then reported the size of the SSD as 8MB, making it unusable. Just goes to show you that all makers have these kind of issues that pop up.

Cool, will instal it today. Luckily i didn't face any issues even after some random shutdown (Touchwood).

Thanks for the link, Gannu. There are similar reports on Intel's community forums. I was almost about to buy an Intel 320 40GB SSD. I even bought an Optical Drive caddy for my old HDD.

Think I will wait for the dust to settle down a bit.

My intel 320 80Gb just died, Got the 8Mb bug today despite the firmware upgrade. RMA ?

ah crap, i lost all my last week's data :S. Mainly my SOP and few review data.

Called up Intel 3 hours back, they said some level 2 team will contact me by 1pm, still waiting for the call :|

Edit : Apparently they were not to reach me because both my mobile and landline are registered under DND service :S

Crap, that sucks! Remember to keep multiple backups of the important data consolidated elsewhere, maybe in some other hard drive or cloud storage service. Important documents such as your SOP, loan/IT returns etc., personal data such as snaps, videos etc. Movies and music can always be had from your friends later so those aren't important.

^I usually take backup every week and all my important documents and spreadsheets are in the Google documents. SOP, i just finished it yesterday and review data (for Asus PA238Q) are those xml files that Spyder 3 saves in the program files. Otherwise i don't keep anything in the OS drive.

Aren't there software's which saves the files on multiple drives the moment you save on one location.

I used to do this for very important files.

So i raised a RMA through the customer care last week and handed over the drive to the service center in person today. Apparently the service center guys doesn't even have clue what an SSD is and were so confused. They were like when did Intel started making hard drives, etc.. Anyways, they took the drive after i provided them with the RMA # and they said they'll process it. I wonder what would happen if one goes directly to the service center for the RMA.

Sorry for the OT but, is that review coming?

^yeah i'll be posting it this weekend. Lost the Spyder 3 data and couple of pics. But will manage with what i have.

Cool, there are very few reviews (even fewer are reputable) for this monitor. Unfortunately, facing issues with mine :(.

This in general is a good sign; when Intel service center guy do not understand the issue they just replace it :P, (My personal experience is very good with Intel).

Was it Redington.

Hello all,

i want to share my HP elitebook 8460p with SSD 320 series problems.

Hard drive Specifications :
1. Model Number : INTEL SSDSA2BW160G3H
2. Model SERIES : INTEL SSD 320 SERIES 160 GB (show as 8 MB in intel SSD toolbox)
3. Serial Number : BAD_CTX 0000013F (shown in intel SSD toolbox)
4. Firmware : 4PC10365

PROBLEMS :

1. Bluescreen error in windows vista enterprise 32 bit after automatic update in my company.

2. After restarting the notebook i got the following message in the startup "REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE". My windows wouldn't even start.

3. I connect my SSD into another computer as secondary drive and boot to the windows. Check in the disk management, i found my harddrive is only 8 MB. Many of the forum called this "8 MB BUG". Note : my SSD harddrive is not shown in my computer.

SOLUTIONS TRIED :

1. HP software & driver : I downloaded "Intel Solid State Drive (SSD) Firmware Update" on website "HP EliteBook 8460p Notebook PC*-* Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center" and trying to do install SP52887 directly from windows and it says "setup status : this harddrive model is not supported : ST380013AS" which is my first harddrive (not the SD). The most updated firmware, i try to install SP5508 and it says "update status : This harddisk model is not supported". SP52887 installer is also comes with disk images to update firmware from boot process, i also do this and it says "your harddrive is having the latest firmware, no upgrade is needed". So, i think i have no luck with HP software & driver.

2. Intel SSD toolbox : I downloaded Intel SSD toolbox from website "http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18455&lang=eng%20" and i cannot update to the latest firmware because of i have the latest firmware already. The only thing left is "SECURE ERASE" and it's the last thing i want to do because it will delete all the data in the SSD hard drive.

QUESTIONS :

Anybody know how to fix SSD 320 series harddrive without secure erase it ?
