Intel's Next Unit Of Computing: Tiny 4.5" Desktop PC To Start Retailing This Month

Intel will start selling tiny 4.5 inch wide desktop PCs this month which are targeted towards DIY enthusiasts and small HTPC lovers.



The small desktops are named NUC or the "Next Unit of Computing". It will be quite powerful for its size packing a power efficient Intel Core i3 processor with HD Graphics 4000. It will be compatible with latest Windows 8 OS also.

  • Processor: 1.8GHz Intel Core i3 3217U power-efficientIvyBridgeprocessor
  • Chipset: Intel QS77 Express Chipset
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000
  • Ports: Dual HDMI Ports, USB 2.0
  • Network: Integrated Intel 10/100/1000 Ethernet
  • Slots: 1 full (supporting mSATA) and 1 half-length mini-PCIe slots
  • Memory: support for Dual-channel DDR3 ; 1600/1333/1066 MHz.

However, the system will not be offered along with memory, storage etc and will be a bare-bones system aimed at DIYers who can customize the rest of the system according to requirements. It will be sold as just the board along with chassis.

The model detailed above ( DC3217BY ) will start retailing this month and will be priced around $300.

All intel doing is creating new names for already existing segments and slapping customers with hefty price tag !

I'd rather but a PI or Zotac box or a custom rig for same purpose.
