my laptop internal dvd drive has gone kaput and i really need to have a dvd drive.
i already have 3.5" sata HDD casing,i want to know can i just buy an internal sata DVD writer and connect it to this HDD casing?will it work just fine?i dont care if DVD writer doesnt fit inside the casing,i would just use the connectors to connect the power and data supplies.so????

don't want to buy external DVD writers as they cost more...
and do you guys think i should buy/replace laptop internal dvd writer instead,i dont want to because if i am not wrong then they are different(sizewise) from normal desktop DVD writers and they are not as robust.right?

and which Internal DVD writers are good now a days, which can play/write local(national, sony, moserbaer etc) as well as branded media types.

looking for your invaluable suggestions.

i am planning to go to nehru place soon so if some can confirm me if this setup will work or not before i make unnecessary purchase of a dvd writer.

Such combination worked for my old desktop PC... theoretically it should work with a laptop too but I am not sure.

Why don't you take your laptop to Nehru Place and try it out right there?

^ you mean you used your sata dvd writer in 3.5" hard drive casing and connected it to your PC using USB port and it worked? like read and write DVD working fine?

UPDATE:

for those looking for an answer to this question.i can tell you this setting works.i connected a sata dvd writer to a 3.5" HDD casing and i was able to read files from it.
i haven't tested writing DVD's but i think it should work fine too.
