Hi,
Recently my SSD died and i needed to ship it to Taiwan. Inquired with many couriers and all were charging around 2-3k and some even said they dont accept electronic items for international shipping.

Paying that much seemed like a waste as the SSD itself now costs around 6-7k so i went to Post Office for using speedpost. One post office rejected saying they do not ship computer and electronic parts for shipping ( stupid reason as the drive was dead and there is no mention of any such policy on the internet).

I went to another post office ( GPO ) and when asked about the contents i told it contains some CDs for replacement from manufacturer, the guy checked a list of allowed items on pc and said that it can be shipped.

He said it will cost 600 bucks via Speed Post and 750 bucks via WNX ( worldnetexpress ) service. The worldnetexpress is fulfilled by DHL in which speedpost delivers the stuff to DHL and later it is handled by DHL for international delivery. For same service through DHL, bluedart charges over 3k, so i went ahead and shipped it for 750.

The item was delivered in flat 7 days including holidays, through tracking details started appearing after 2 days ( probably because it was not delivered to DHL till then. The tracking is available on DHL site with the AWB no and proof of delivery (signature) is also mailed.

So people who want to ship international items can use this service from post offices, it is reliable and value for money. :)

worldnetexpress is pretty old now. It is tie up of India post & DHL for last mile connectivity.
Best is you can go to any post office & ask for worldnetexpress. They will accept & send to near by post office (mostly main/GPO) which supports wolrdnet.
Tracking works on DHL, Superfast & cheap.

yeah its old but people are not aware so i posted .. they allow electronics but some post offices may refuse and others may ask you for showing the contents .

thanks, this is nice to know.
the next question is : how do you get your SSD back ?
it was Patriot ssd which has 10 years warranty but needs to be shipped to taiwan or USA for rma. they acknowledged the receipt and will now ship a replacement drive back on their own expense :)

Do they allow electronics as well?
Yes they do (at least they used to about 0ne year back).
I've used their service a few times in the past and they are excellent. Fast like DHL with accurate tracking but at 1/3rd the cost of DHL.

I went to my post office , and they said can't ship motherboard to USA. I ask about worldnetexpress . They started staring at me like I was an alien.
Have to visit the headpostoffice now.

they have a list of acceptable items in their software , if they refuse , ask them to check in that properly in all categories.

My local PO refused to accept a mobile phone. I called up WNEx at their toll-free no and the guy over there personally called the Postmaster General of that post office and made him accept that phone.

Hey!
Can you message me where in kolkata it is? I need to ship out a headset for replacement to Denmark :P , problem is I am afraid that return shipping from company will attract customs...any way to avoid that, since technically its just a replacement.

I used the foreign post office at Kiran shankar roy road. It's on the Strand road, near SBI main branch. They were pretty helpful. You can use Speedpost (EMS) too - little bit cheaper but slower.
The return shipping will attract customs duty but you can try and ask the sender to mark it as "defective- being sent for replacement" etc.

Was able to talk to them over the toll free number, and he has told me to visit the Head Post office or RMS, the estimated cost he told me will be 1800 for a 2 Kg package. Seems reasonable ?

Tried the local post office at my town. As expected, they knew absolutely nothing about the service. On top of it, the postmaster suggested me to visit the nearest city (Erode) to send my package through Speed Post as he was not sure about speed post's international shipping :o
Since I had to send the documents urgently, I went ahead and shipped through DHL. Cost me around 2700 bucks (after discount). I'm pretty sure Speed post or Worldnetexpress would have cost cheaper by at least Rs.1000..

Worldnetexpress rate is approx 1/3rd compared to DHL. Speedpost is even cheaper.

^^ Yeah.. Maybe next time I will try the service. This time was an emergency, and I couldn't postpone it much. BTW, DHL has an amazing service. Package collected in my town last Friday, and delivered at Kuala Lumpur yesterday morning.
