The world’s most-used internet browser, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, is on a steady decline in India, reveals a study by Irish metrics firm StatCounter. IE, as it’s known, has lost almost 20% market share in India in the past two years
the percentage of PCs running Internet Explorer in India dropped from close to 70% in 2008 to about 51%, currently . The drop was despite an absence of any regulation by a trade commission , unlike that mandated by European

Worldwide, Internet Explorer’s market share has suddenly started dipping, and rivals Chrome’s and Firefox’s rising, from this month, following the EU regulation. Worldwide IE has a market share of about 55% followed by Firefox’s 31%, Chrome at 7% and Safari at about 4% currently.

Meanwhile, in developed markets like Germany, Firefox has already beaten IE while in France it has lost close to 6% to Firefox and Google’s Chrome since January, this year.

Had to come to this someday.. took a damn long time. Let's hope our Govt websites start coming forward with support for browsers other than IE.

yes. this was expected. MS took it for granted for a long time and are now paying the price. IE9 may take some share back as it looks really really interesting.

if the online shopping and banking sites work better with non IE browsers then I would see the 51% share reduce much faster. Most of the sites in india are hardcoded for IE6

How much time would that take?? :( I hate it when i need to open IE.

And not to forget that major companies prefer a prebundled browser with their windows setup which is again IE. To make things worse they don't even update the browser to IE7 or 8.

Well what I think is that the only reason why IE has a higher market ratio is because it is default explorer for Windows and ease of use for people who just use the browser out of the box and does not know/want to tinker with Mozilla or Chrome.

That is why first thing most people do after getting a new machine is install a better browser. Earlier only people like use used to do this, just about everyone. even my friend's GF who is accountant and is complete non-tech person runs chrome:P

Plus, for people who don't switch or atleast upgrade to latest version, they are now forced to do so, as their fav sites refuse to run.
