Hi...!
We are 3 hostel inmates, n we hav 3 laptops.
We got an internet connection from Asianet, which is a Cable ISP.
Unfortunately, this cable modem has a single LAN slot, so only one system can use internet at a time...

How can we use the internet on 3 systems simultaneously....?
Help much appreciated...
Thanks a lot:):)

a cheap solution would be to get a switch else if you have cash to spend, then get a wireless router.

connect the cable coming from the modem's lan slot to any port in the switch, then get 3 lan cables and connect them to the laptops from the other ports of the switch.

you could also share the internet without spending anything via your laptop's wifi using ICS or hosting a proxy. Check the link for info.

How To Share Internet Connection

@tejo : A switch won't help the OP in this case. Asianet gives a Cable Modem, not a router cum modem like most DSL connections. It cannot be connected straight to a switch.

@OP : Get a basic wireless router for about 1-1.5k, it will solve your problem and you can access the internet wirelessly too. :) Connect the cable from the Cable Modem to the WAN port of the router and follow the setup instructions of the router. You should be up and running in no time.

A router cum modem is used where telephone lines are present since they can join multiple networks(telephone+internet into a single line). The OP has cable internet in which there is no telephone line that's why a cable modem is used.

Be it a cable modem or a 'router cum modem' in the end it is connected to the computer via an ethernet port. The ethernet port can be directly connected to a switch and theb dhcp server of the cable modem will assign ips to all the computers connected to the switch.

OP does not have much to spend and requires a cheap/free solution.

^ I don't think it works that way.

DSL Router Cum Modem is not used to join "telephone+internet into a single line" ;) There are DSL Modems alone which doesn't offer the NAT and router capabilies.

The ISP provides only ONE public IP, now if you connect it as you say, which machine will be allotted that IP? What about the others? How does the 'Internet Sharing' actually happen?

I suggest you Google for more info.

@OP : You need a router, you cannot share the internet connection from a modem with just a switch (atleast not with the cheap consumer grade switches :P).

eBay India: Edimax BR-6204WG Wireless Router 54Mbps 3 years Warran (item 120683516259 end time 13-Mar-2011 16:44:35 IST)

eBay India: NEW MODEL BELKIN WIRELESS G BROADBAND ROUTER 54MBPS (item 300528945904 end time 02-Mar-2011 08:00:00 IST)

Or you can share it by using an Adhoc wireless network and a proxy or ICS as tejo mentioned.

I was assuming the modem offers NAT in which case he could use a switch :) (correct me if i am wrong)

He can still use ICS via wifi :P

oops...!

Yes mine is Asianet Cable modem... its just a modem i guess.... so we can't get internet on all wit just a switch, rite....? :P
