Hi,
I'm using Airtel 2mpbs internet with Belkin N 150 modem. (Through Wire) . Internet works most of the time , but sometimes it get disconnected and comes back in 5-10 mins . At this time , the internet 'blue' light in the modem glows (like everything works fine).
I don't know if the problem is with airtel / my modem. How do I solve this issue ?

Thanks in advance

Did you call the Airtel help desk? what did they say ?

They came over and it was working when they came. They said "check the modem". This happens once in 2-3 hours for ~5 mins.
This will be a standard answer, note down the specific times it switches off and then email them with the details saying it is their fault, and if they feel its the modem, they can provide a standby modem to prove you wrong.

I was facing similar issue, I removed the adsl spliter which I was using to connect my phone, and connected the modem directly. That solved my problem. You might want to check if the dsl wires/connectors are not causing any interference.

Modem is in my room directly connected to the wall and phone is in the hall with the splitter.. But google worked and other sites like yahoo and youtube did'nt work. So confusing . There is no problem with my browser (tried on chrome and ffox)/system, and used my back up internet tata photon and everything worked.

In that case I, would suggest you use Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4), instead of the automatic DNS server provided by airtel.
Last week I was facing a similar issue when I was able to browse sites which were already open in the browser, but trying to open any new site was failing. From the modem diagnostic found that the dns server was unavailable, so replaced it with google public dns to make it work.

How will this affect me ? Will it be secure for online transactions and so on? Also this looks complicated and I'm not really a tech geek.

Well security won't be compromised that's for sure, on anyday you can trust google more then airtel. DNS will be used only during resolution of domain name to the IP address.
Some of the site will load up faster using google DNS (specially the google ones like youtube etc..).

Although it looks complicated, if you follow the steps properly it is very easy, and you can always revert back to your original setting if things doesn't work.

You can also set the DNS in your modem (that's what I have done), login to your modem (normally the IP would be 192.168.1.1.) and go to Advance Setup > DNS > DNS Server (this exact names will change depending on the modem being used), there should be field for entering a static dns IP. This way all the devices using the modem will be using Google dns, and you don't have to make changes in the OS network properties.

Is it possible to check whether the problem is with Airtel or my Belkin modem? I don't have a spare modem.
Is there any other checking/diagnostic methods?

You can keep track of the ip address of the sites which give you problem. (you can ping the site to get the IP , for e.g. from a command prompt type ping yahoo.com, for getting the IP address of yahoo.com)
Whenever you face the problem of those sites not opening, try using the IP address directly instead of the domain name, if using IP address you are able to open the site whereas using domain name fails, then you can be pretty sure there is an issue with the DNS server.
