Is it possible to have broadband internet service through current DTH technology in India ? Is there any technical limitations ?I heard somewhere that Airtel is planning to do that - don't know when. Please share your views

PS: Not sure in which section to post. MOD please move to the appropriate section

Can't comment if DTH is the right word. But High Speed internet is already in place using Microwave technology for data transmission which you can correlate to DTH type.

well there is a possibility but u will have to buy expensive stb that can upstream back to sattelite or some stb upstream data via telephone wire while downstream is via sattelite,we have been hearing that from a long time.

hey all,

dunno how many of u are aware of the new tata sky plus box? the new box is completly future ready....do some digging and u find it comes with a usb and an ethernet port...so yes, the answer is that 2 way communication using DTH is a possibility and not a myth.....

well just because tata sky+ has ethernet and usb (which even big tv) has doesnt mean its internet ready ,and the TS+ doesnt have the power or device to transmitt back to the sattelite and no telephone socket either.

duuhh :( so no way so far

these reliance(big),airtel, tata sky all where rumoured that they will launch satellite broadband via DTH.nothing in reality.

well these stbs with ethernet or usb may potentialy be used to give internet access by connecting to a modem or router via ethernet or usb,and they probably might sell the optional IR based keyboard alteast this are features in some of stb available abroad.

high speed broadband on DTH along with IPTV would have been great idea, but the way technology is accepted by GOI and telecom sector is pathetic in india.

the Ethernet port is provided because the stb needs to have a return path for running interactive applications on it. its a mandatory feature for OCAP or MHP stbs. if we connect the stb to internet using the ethernet port provided, it will communicate with the service provider for performing various interactive tasks (for example recharging the subscription)

as of now, the ethernet port is not for providing internet, but to connect to internet... :)

Was just going to say that! Your supposed to connect the ethernet port to your router to enable interactive pay per view content.

just speculating, but when u want to watch a movie on demand won't some data be sent back and only then the streaming will start ? If that is the case then it could work. don't know for sure.

Satellite Internet is very popular in the US and some parts of europe in country / hilly areas where setting up lines is expensive and time consuming . It could be a boon for India if implemented properly

Although upload speeds are usually very low and latency is high so it isnt meant for gaming and such , but its good fro normal web surfing etc

Satellite television in india is just one way communication, if you request any pay per view movie on tata sky you hav to call them, then that channel is enabled for your set top box.. In short, its just the same thing that comes from your cable walla but direct to your home.. There is no possibility of internet here...

I dont see internet jumping on to the sat bandwagon for a long time to come... already companies are fighting over the limited transponders on sats.. its gonna be hard to free bw for internet usage in such a scenario

Exactly and could never compete with a wired connection if you had one, performance wise or cost wise.

Short answer is yes its possible but only for those with no alternative.
