YouTube - Intro to macro
Here is a short Description :

The equipments :

Good digital Camera (preferably a huge DSLR with a huge Macro lens :P)
A tripod to avoid hand shake.
A wire / wireless remote shtter release button (this can be overcome by setting timer of 2/6/10 seconds)
An object to shoot

The preparations :
Get a good atmosphere with good ambient lighting, a nice object to shoot and get your equipments ready.

Depth of field :
DOF is the area of field where the object is prominently in sharp focus and background blurred. it can be shallow so that highlights the objects better or deep which includes some more background with object.

Lighting :

you need to have good ambient lighting to shoot a good macro photo. if not proper lighting is found you can use reflectors like white / silver / gold.

Lastly :

Shoot multiple photos with different settings so that the result can be varied but pleasing.
Thanks to Esopete and Johnsigleton for sharing this excellent tutorial.
