Pretty strange we did not have a thread for games based on the iOS platform (despite several users having played a lot of titles), so here it goes!

Here are the titles I have installed on my iPad 2 I had recently acquired:

Played bits of RAGE HD yesterday (completed the tutorial and the first chapter) and the gameplay was super addictive. Heck, I had to pause playing Alice: Madness Returns for sometime as a result! Some screenshots below (some of them have been resized!).

Almost all FPS titles seem to be based on rail shooters. Remember Virtua Cop 2? Or the more recent Dead Space: Extraction? RAGE HD is exactly similar. The character moves are controlled by AI and inputs from the user is required for firing the gun, reloading, controlling the crosshair and changing the weapon. The crosshair is controlled with the left hand input and the remaining functions with the right hand. There is plenty of free estate on the 9.7" 1024 x 768 display for the user inputs. The crosshair can alternately be controlled using the gyroscope (tilting and swivelling the iPad) or on a virtual space which is limited. The touch sensitivity can be adjusted as well. The game .ipa download is roughly 770 MB in size and the installation size is around 1.1GB.

So to say, RAGE HD doesn't boast of the best graphics for a game developed for the iPad but the game supposedly runs at 60 fps as demonstrated by Carmack on the iPhone 4. Besides, this is the first title based on the much revered id Tech 5 engine. For the initial bits that I had played, there were absolutely no hiccups - no lags or frame drops, the game played butter smooth. The ergonomics of the iPad is pretty good - whilst held in the landscape mode, the grip is solid (I have a silicone case so the rubber'ish feel adds to the grip as well; a barebone iPad OTOH has the Aluminium-finished back and may be a bit slippery) and for the average human's hands, he/she is able to access the entire area of the display for the required inputs.

I was never a fan of portable gaming and never fancied getting a PSP (borrowed a friend's PSP for playing GOW: Chains of Olympus, GOW: Ghost of Sparta and few other titles though!) but this seems like a good investment indeed for folks who love gaming and spend some time on daily commutes from their home to work. The iPad isn't meant to be a gaming console either - it is merely a tablet that has the added capability of being one!

Anyhow, those are purely my views and it may differ from others'. I would request fellow iOS gamers to pitch in with their views, reviews, previews of the games. I suppose a dedicated thread for each title wouldn't be required.

Stop Playing FPS game on ipad ,go get plants vs zombies now thats super fun on ipad :).

On a side note completed Rage HD ,Mirror's Edge,Fifa

Rage HD has sucked many hours from my life. Just the pleasure of mowing down mutants is enough for me to go back again and again. :)

Another game that I found extremely addictive is Gun Bros. Free app, with tons of in-app (purchasable) content. Build your player, shoot down enemies, earn coin and cash, upgrade weapons and armor, fun power-ups. Free online co-op multiplayer.

@sarang: I am not sure of that either and the first time I kept searching it never turned up at the Indian store. :( But anyhow I suppose we can register with a US store with a US based CC and get the game? Possibly blame it on Apple and not id. :@

@faheem: Possibly a corrupt .ipa file. Download it again.

Meh I hate games like those and Angry Birds alike. Can't be bothered about those. Besides I suppose our tastes are different.

Gannu have got Dead Space, will reply here after trying out. Wish something like Amnesia for iOS :jumpy:

Try RealRacing2 and Nova2 !!

RR2 is amazing and harnesses the power of iPhone/iPad to the fullest.

Xplane4g . it looks amazing on iPad2 . Best flying simulator for iOS(probably the only flying simulator for iOS :P)

And if you are Jailbreaking it, try voice activator, ifile, sbsettings, mywi for tethering and Winterboard for themes.

So, I was on a fortnight long vacation spent at my hometown and happened to complete few titles on the iPad 2. I'll briefly post reviews and some screenshots (resized!) of the titles I've completed by far and for those I am playing at the moment.
Mirror's Edge:

The game is pretty much reminiscent of the original title released for the PC and consoles with the beautiful Utopian cities, trance soundtracks and our smexy protagonist Faith returning in this iOS port. The difference being that this title is a side-scroller with 3D graphics instead of the first-person view. Faith deploys her Parkour skills to span across 14 chapters, climb rooftops of skyscrapers, slide and squeeze through vent exhausts, walk across the billboards (a la the Prince in Sands of Time series), zip-lining from a building to the adjacent one, negotiating obstacles while evading and knocking down the govt. surveillance executives. She's pretty good at what she does!

The game is based on the UE 3 engine and the graphics is pretty good albeit the lack of AA is evident with jagged edges visible. Not nitpicking here! Controlling Faith's movements are simple - swipe on the screen towards left or right to make Faith move towards that direction. She gains momentum as she runs without hitting any obstacles on the path. To resist the impact of a fall, swiping the finger down on the display causes Faith to roll after a fall from a height. Faith can knock down the opponents in the path with a swipe but cannot use any weapon in the game. Obstacles or objects of interests are highlighted in red as Faith closes in on them.
Mirror's Edge for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is priced at 0.99$ at the iTunes store and at 9.99$ for the exclusive iPad HD version.
The only gripe I've had with the game is the short gameplay time. Each chapter can be completed in less than 5 minutes and the entire game could be completed in less than an hour! I am not kidding. There is no apparent learning curve in the game except that the user needs to familiarise with the controls on the device which may take a while. FWIW the game is a definite must play for folks who loved the original game on the PC/consoles. All in all a good game.

Dead Space:
W8czS.png

One of the best sellers on the PC and consoles, the much acclaimed survival-horror title makes it to the iOS platform and the already engrossing and gory experience couldn't get any better and scarier! The game puts us into the shoes of an engineer who btw is NOT Isaac Clarke! I wouldn't want to reveal who it is as it might end up being a major spoiler since the events in the game chronologically happens between Dead Space and Dead Space II, with the church and the government involved. Play the game when you can lay your hands on an iOS device - the game can be played on an iPad, iPhone (3GS or later) or iPod Touch (4th gen. or later).
When I desired to pick up the iPad 2, the first title I wanted to attempt was RAGE. For all the obvious reasons i.e. But turns out, RAGE was more of a tech. demo than an actual game based on id's Tech 5 engine and pieces of what might be in store for us from the title that releases this October. I probably regret that decision after I had attempted and completed Dead Space! I should've attempted this or perhaps Infinity Blade. (I shall brief about my experiences on Infinity Blade later.)
Dead Space is based on an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective and we control the protagonist through several levels on a stranded space station (duh!), being guided by another member who is stranded elsewhere. Visually, this game boasts of one of the best graphics and lighting tech. for a game based on the iOS platform. The usual crop of Dead Space fundas. apply - GORE (lots of it!), frequent hallucinations, no visible HUDs on the display, Necromorphs (albeit very few types), combat based on strategic dismemberment (targeting specific parts of the necros to bring them down and kill them such as limbs, torsos etc), Stasis (to slow down the AI such as doors, necros. etc), Kinesis (to pick up and throw objects from a distance), Zero-G and vacuum movements occasionally. Getting used to the controls takes a bit. Movement is controlled from the left portion of the screen, the camera is controlled from the right side. Available weapons are indicated at the top right corner and can be tapped to use them. Each weapon has an alternate fire mode and the device can either be tilted or tapped (depending on the option selected) to use the fire mode. Melee can be performed by swiping as indicated on the display and stomping is performed by swiping near the top left corner. Weapons are usually obtained from specific locations and can be upgraded using power nodes (found scattered or stored at different locations) at benches. Alternately, power nodes and credits can also be purchased from the Apps Store (no kidding!). The engineer's suit and stasis ability can also be upgraded as indicated in the screenshots.
The sound aspects of the game deserves a mention here. Like all the previous iterations of Dead Space where sound has played a pivotal role in arousing fear, anxiety and panic in the player, this title as well proves its significance once again. The moment you tap on the game's icon to launch it from the device's springboard, the EA logo pops and a suggestion advising the player to wear headphones for a better experience. I concur. As for that matter, any good horror title cannot be experienced at its best without proper gear and settings - headphones and dark environment! The JVC Marshmallow IEMs proved a decent companion with this game.
Dead Space for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is priced at 6.99$ at the iTunes store and at 9.99$ for the exclusive iPad HD version.
The campaign length is pretty good and spanned 4 hours on Normal difficulty. Not many bad aspects of the game that I can think of ATM. Seems like this was a brilliant port to the iOS platform not to be missed by gamers who own an iOS device and loved playing the Dead Space titles back on the PC/consoles. Well worth the time.

More on Infinity Blade, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles, MGS Touch, Resident Evil 4, GTA: Chinatown Wars et al. will follow later. :)

Awwh man, seeing those images of DS, brings back the harrowing experience it was -- playing it. Darn.

I am new to iOS and own iPhone 4. Suggest some good games to be played on the iPhone 4. Have the usual ones like angry birds, cut the rope etc.

Thanks to Gannu, installed Mirror's Edge from App store. I never really liked the game on the PC because it was a tad boring but playing this on an Ipad is a completely different experience. The side scroller platformer like mechanics are a welcome change too. I have tried a lot of Ipad games and frankly not many have truly impressed me, Mirror's Edge is a decent experience though.

Please keep this thread updated incase of any more paid games on offer for free. :D

Plants Vs Zombies is THE most addictive phone game I have ever played. Its for $3 in app store, totally worth it.

Chrono Trigger has been released for iOS.

I was playing the DS version until I got stuck. Didn't play it for a while and forgot where I was supposed to go. If anyone gets a hold of this do let me know where does Doan ask us to go with the Bike after the basement mission - The sewers or Site 32?

Suggest some good addictive casual games for the iphone4. The games don't have to be very high end graphics, but game play should be good. My wife is hooked onto plants vs zombies and i love playing Parking Mania (which has accelometer control to turn the car). Too bad the same game is not there on android.
