Apple sent out invitations on Tuesday for an event in exactly one week's time where the company is widely expected to unveil a new "iPad mini," a smaller version of its market-leading tablet computer. Several news organisations received the invitations for the the October 23 event

Reports have been swirling for months about the smaller version of the market-leading iPad, but Apple has made no comment.
Some blogs which closely monitor Apple say the new tablet could be priced from $249 to $399, which could pressure rivals such as the Amazon Kindle Fire.

The announcement comes three days prior to the release of Microsoft's new Surface tablet and two days before Apple reports quarterly earnings.


Various reports have cited the specifications of the new tablet and some pictures have also leaked. It is expected to have a screen of 7.85 inches (20 centimeters) compared with 9.7 inches for the current iPad.

The iPad Mini will come in 16 different memory and wireless configurations, according to an inventory system screenshot obtained by MobileGeeks. The screen capture allegedly comes from the internal inventory system of Media Market, Europe's largest electronics retailer.
The page -- in German -- lists pricing for various configurations in euros, presumably with Europe's 19 percent value-added tax already factored into the price. Prices will start at 249 euros ($322) for a Wi-Fi-only 8GB iPad Mini, with other memory configurations of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB also available. The high-end 64GB cellular version is listed at about $650, presumably with 4G LTE capability.

This can be a real money spinner for apple tablet mkt, facing competition of late. 30% dip in its mkt share seems to have rattled Apple to be coming out with the mini version. Long time overdue and a good move as well i think. Rumours also suggest there might be different colours to choose from like ipod nano.

Tim Cook apologising for the short comings of the iOS6, a more price conscious diet version of the ipad + be hitting the sweet spot vis a vis size (and the color options) .. This really seems to be striking all the right notes.

Might well be groundbreaking in more than ways, than what apple has usually been doing.

Aim is to hit 7 inch tablets , Galaxy Tab 2 . It will not hit their ipad as 70/80 % are generally decided whether they want the 7 incher or the 9/10 . So both markets are different and if a ipad mini is available in price of competitor 10 incher than budget guys will prefer ipad mini

i think Nexus 7 is a bigger threat than tab2 or Kindle...

the mini version will definitely be a hit in india if priced within 20k...some people may also dump nexus 7 for a higher priced mini ipad for that apple tag

If its below 20k than galaxy tab2 is will be seriously hit , Galaxy tab 2 has added advantage of GSM but apple name will be bigger attraction
 
The $329 iPad mini costs $198 to make, study says

Unlike its rivals that are selling their tablets at or near cost, Apple is reportedly selling its iPad mini for a lot more than it costs to make.

The material for Apple's new line of 7.9-inch screen tablets adds up to $188, IHS, an analytics firm, estimates. When you add in a manufacturing expense, the total comes to $198.


That's a margin of $141 between the estimated cost and the $329 price tag on the 16 GB iPad mini. That margin increases as storage goes up. Apple sells 32 GB models for $429 and 64 GB models for $529, even though the cost of material only increases slightly, IHS estimates.


But while Apple is making a vast profit on each iPad mini unit sold, Amazon and Google are breaking even or barely pulling a profit.


Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has said publicly that his company is selling the $199 16 GB 7-inch Kindle Fire HD at cost. IHS also tore down that device and said it estimates its materials cost $165. Once you add in manufacturing costs, the price goes up to $174, according to IHS.


Google too sells its tablet close to its cost. IHS estimates the material for the $199 16 GB Nexus 7 costs $159.25. The price goes up to $166.75 when you add in the cost of manufacturing.


Of course, Amazon and Google has to keep the price as low as possible if they want to take a bite out of Apple's dominance of the tablet market.

Amazon and Google are like the US telecom operators who give out phones free of cost or for a fraction of retail price. What they are really selling is their services and the devices are just a means to make people sign up into their services.

Apart from that, the main difference between Google/Microsoft like companies and Apple is the value for money they offer with their products. Google/Microsoft sell products with decent to good value for money at an extremely competitive price while still making some profit either from the sale or through a different means. Apple on the other hand charges a premium price on their products even though they offer very poor value for money. So they make very high profits although completely at the expense of their customers. So in the end, it is win-win situation in one case and totally one sided win-lose in the other.
