iPhone 3G baseband hacked, one step closer to an unlock

The iPhone Dev Team has posted a video showing their recent progress with the iPhone 3G. They have hacked their way in to the PMB8878 baseband processor, which gives them unrestricted access to the iPhone 3G hardware - and, you guessed it, the means to unlock the phone for use on any carrier.

Of course, the unlock isn't here yet, but it's clearly only a matter of time.

^^ I don't think so.... You can see the TOS of apple before buying iPhone...

$400 for iPhone + $300 something addition.. If anyone planning to import it from USA then it will cost ~30-31k... If you still love to use iPhone then you can go with Vodafone or Airtel iPhone and then unlock it... That will be better

I expect a slash in prices for at least the eBay iPhone items, especially the (so called) "Legally unlocked iPhones".

Legally unlocked means the ones that came unlocked Out of the box. Like the ones in Italy, Hongkong etc.

They are not unlocked by the dealers. Rather iPhones in Italy and Hong Kong are factory unlocked. And these units are sold at a premium on eBay.

The iPhone Dev-Team is ending the year with a bang! The team has unlocked the iPhone 3G and is now prepping it up for a user-friendly release on New Year's Eve.

Here are a few notes from the team you should know about if you're planning to unlock your iPhone 3G:

* This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier.
* You can tell what version baseband you have by going to Settings->General->About->Modem Firmware
* The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone. It'll be installable via Cydia and so it doesn't matter if you have a Mac or PC.
* Please refrain from updating your baseband, regardless of what version you're at.

And I believe within few days their will be a code piece to downgrade iPhone's baseband/firmware to make unlocking much easier
