Im using an iphone 3gs with version 4.1 & Firmware 06.15.00. Got it unlocked locally.

Downloaded certain Apps from App store but most are not working.

How to use them properly?

Also how is Cydia used?

During messaging, receive an alert:
Could not activate cellular data network
You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

How to go around this error?
Should I update to 4.2 & is it an easy DIY job? Or could I end up bricking the device?
 
I own an Ipod touch 4g has the same framework so cant comment on the

to use cydia you will have to jailbreak your device.search for limera1n,blackra1n,greenp0ison etc can help you unlock or jailbreak your device.I think the root of most problems is because it was not jailbroken properly.install the new firmware 4.3 and use any of the above mentioned names jailbreak tools to jailbreak your device.its so simple a caveman could do it,just follow onscreen instructuions.you will need wifi to install cydia.and you are done! :D cheers!!

@teche: Getting that message during messaging is ok.. happens once in a while.. just dismiss it...
Hold on to any updating, as you cannot do it by yourself... Jailbreaking and unlocking is a little tricky and if gone wrong can leave your iphone without any unlock ( u won't be able to use your sim card in it, as it is software unlocked)
 
Need another solution, have certain Files/Apps on my Computer. How to transfer to iphone, both with itunes & without?
 
Thanks, mine is already Jailbroken.

Any other solutions for installing Apps from Computer to iphone? Basically I was trying to install GPS/Maps.
 
GPS functionality is broken with 06.15 baseband on the 3GS. That particular baseband is actually an iPad baseband, but can be used on the iPhone 3GS. The reason being that any baseband higher than 05.13.04 on the 3GS can't be unlocked. So what the guy who unlocked your iPhone did is update the baseband to 06.15 and then unlock it.

Cell tower based triangulation will work fine. But don't waste your money on paid apps like TomTom etc. At least, not until a GPS fix is found.
