iPhone from US

I plan to buy an iPhone, finally!! I was thinking whether it would be more economical if i can get the iPhone from US? What do you think? It's 199$ over there and near about 670$ here in India...will it work here if I get it from US..??

If I get an iPhone 3GS from US, can it be unlocked and used here?

Hasn't this been discussed to death by now, all over the interwebs?

iPhone in US is $200 because it's subsidized item, you need get 2 years AT&T contract with it, hence the low price. If you want to buy unlocked iPhone without contract (HongKong Apple store sells such iPhones) then costs you almost the same as here. Sorry about putting water on your dreams for getting iPhone at $200 price, but that's the fact.
