My dad wants to purchase an iphone. He wants it mainly for internet and the apps.

1)So which carrier should he go for ----vodaphone or airtel(he lives in trivandrum).
2)Which among the two offers better iphone data plans ? Does any of these offer unlimited internet usage??
3)What's the warranty of iphone like ?
4) Is there any way he can download iphone apps (atleast the free ones) without using a credit card??
5)Is there any way he can transfer music and movies to the iphone without using itunes.
6)Can he sync his iphone with two seperate computers??
Also suggest any cons of iphone other than the hefty price tag.

Reps for those who help.

1. Airtel

2. Airtel provides free Gprs/Edge services for 1 year (500 MB per month for 12 months)

3. 1 Year warranty (though you can extend it to 2 more years)

4. It was possible around a month back to get an itunes account without any credit-card, not sure if that method still works.

5. It might be possible, but iTunes is your best bet.

6. Yes

Technically, yes
You can open an iTunes account using a iTunes gift card
Only for the iTunes US Store account. For the India store you still need a credit card and he has to open an India store account for the iPhone.

iPhone 3G doesn't have AppInstaller???

We could install apps using that in iPhone 2g na??? That's disgusting guys.. :(

Just wanted to add; yes, you can sync calendar bookmarks etc. with two

different machines but syncing music etc. would require a little tweaking.

And, the Pros outweigh the tiny Cons by a considerable margin so you don't need to worry about that.:)

Disgusting ? It was there in earlier iPhone versions (before 2.x) because there was no appstore at that time. However, it is still available for new iPhone (both 2G and 3G) in the form of Cydia and Installer. You need a jailbroken iPhone to use Cydia or Installer whereas AppStore can used on all iPhones.

AppStore is a place where you can download/buy apps for the iPhone. Many of the apps available here are free.

Okay thx guys , got a few more questions to ask.

1)Is 500 MB/month enough for regular web surfing and occasional map surfing via google earth ?? I mean, say, if you access 50-100 webpages(graphically rich like engadget) daily ??

2) Is there any way you can use iphone with other cellphone carriers like bsnl without voiding the warranty(say after a period of 1 yr.)? if so how to do it??

3)Does one need an itunes account to transfer music and vids stored on your computer to iphone?? I guess not but anyway wanted to confirm.

yes, you can sync calendar bookmarks etc. with two different machines but syncing music

So if your friend creates an itunes account on his computer, then can you connect your iphone to it and download apps while using your own computer to transfer music, movies, etc, etc ?? My friend does have a credit card so i could use his computer to download apps.

Should be enough for casual surfing. Also once you are on iPhone, I am sure you will start appreciating RSS readers which give you quick and cheap (in terms of bandwidth cost) access to news.

After a period of 1 year ? Warranty is only for 1 year, so unless you extend it using AppleCare Protection, it doesnt make a difference. iPhone 3G has not been software unlocked yet, but I am pretty sure it will be out in a few months time.

No. You dont need an itunes account for that.

Yes, thats possible. But you need to have "Manually sync music/videos" option enabled on your friend's itunes.

1. Yeah should be, but if your a heavy mailbox user then it might max out.

2. Not yet

3. No

You can create and iTunes account with your friend's card and login using that account on your machine to download apps.

Thank you everybody.

okay forgot to ask one thing:----

Should i get a screen guard ?? What about a case??

okay so i finally go to buy an iphone and the sales guy said there was a plan for unlimited internet usage for 1500 bucks per year. Can someone confim this ??

i dont know about that. but what i do know is that vodafone has priced the phone cheaper (unless airtel has dropped the prices). i would say that if both have equally good/bad networks in trivandrum, compare the phone and usage prices and see which falls out to be cheaper.

Per Year ? Never heard of a plan which is "per year"! Vodafone or Airtel ?

air tel. He said you can either go for free 500 mb/month plan or pay adl. 1500 Rs. and get unlimited edge/gprs for a yr. Even their website doesn't mention any such plans.

Any way got any idea how much we have to pay for edge/gprs after a period of 1 yr??

Airtel and vodafone are pretty damn expensive. Atleast in Mumbai. Airtel is like 399 pm for 100 MB download! Vodafone is even more expensive.
