iPod is behaving strangely

Nikhil

Forerunner
Device: iPod Photo 20 GB. No video, but it has a colourscreen

A few days back, I switched on my ipod and everything was deleted. No photos, no music, nothing.

It asked me to chose a language !!

Anyway, I connected it to my comp and it says free space 1 GB, occupied space 16 GB. So, the music was there but I couldnt find it. Check ALL the folders including the hidden ones. Nothing.

Anyway, nothing to do but to format it. I did and loaded all the music again from the comp. This was a blessing in disguise as I was anyway planning to update my iPod but was too lazy :P

Anyway, then again today I switch on my ipod after a gap of 5 days and everything is gone !! Again !!

I connect it to my comp and iTunes doesnt recognise it.

It shows up as "Apple iPod" in My COmputer (Earlier it used to show up as "Nikhil" as that is what I have named it). But if I right click on the icon, the comp hangs. After 2-3 mins, the comp becomes fine, but there is no drop down menu from the ipod from where I can choose Format, etc...

What is wrong with this thing ?

It happens to my iPod as well. Do a soft reset two or three times (sometimes even once will do) and your ipod should look like it normally does.

(For a soft reset, hold the Menu button and the Middle button for 5-10 seconds. A soft reset won't erase any of your data)

In my case, I am fairly certain the cause is that the HDD cable inside is a bit loose. I just press on the rear part of the casing a couple of times and it works.

I have done the soft reset loads of times.... no use at all.

Ok, format it using the windows explorer and restore it using itunes (itunes downloads the firmware first before restoring it)

Also if all else fails try rockbox ;)

formatting it doesn't always fix the problem.

if the 'soft reset' doesn't work, try updating the firmware..

If that doesn't work as well then there's something wrong with it's harddisk or some other internal problem..

get it checked,if that's the case..

I cant open it in Windows, so formatting is out.

iTunes isnt recognising the iPod, so how do I update it ?

well then, just take it to the nearest apple service centre or some place else and get it checked..
if the repairs are gonna be expensive, you'd be better off gettin a new ipod/

use ipodwizard to update/flash firmware on it, you need to find the firmware file for that though, you will have to google a lot, or it might be in your itunes folder as a *.ipsw file

dude,his ipod isn't being detected by the comp.(windows) !
how do you expect to update the firmware of a device that's not detected by the computer???

Don't break anything by trying to format it. Get it checked to be sure that there isn't any hardware problem on it. By the way, how old is it?
