So I got my sis a new 30GB video iPod. The damn thing isn't showing up in Explorer, (system in sig), even though it shows up in add-remove hardware. I go to the Disk Management snap-in in Control Panel -> Computer management, and the iPod isn't allotted a drive letter.

So, I right-click and "Change Drive Letter and Paths". Allot it K:. I have one hard drive (C, and 2 DVDRWs, D: and E:.

Still, the iPod doesn't show up in Explorer, but if I right click on the IPod icon in Disk Management, I can Explore the drive, and it shows 3 folders ,Calendar, Contacts and Notes.

Same issue with mom's older nano.. I had installed the nano 2 months back and it worked just fine.. was away for work, got the new video iPod, and it as well as the nano aren't showing up in Explorer, iTunes, mlipod and the iPod updater (says, cannot mount iPod).

So what can I do?

enable disk usage from ipod properties/settings in itunes

This is a one time setting, and you'll be good to go after that!

^Where does it show up in iTunes? Can't see it..iTunes -> Edit -> Preferences -> Ipod tab, says No iPod connected.

Hmm, do this, Download the latest ipod updater

Now connect the ipod to the PC (preferably a different one than the one you are connecting it to currently)

Give it a minute or two

Open ipod updater

Do a Full restore

Open itunes

Enable disk usage from the ipod options tab

try this...go to ipod options in iTunes, and change the song transfer setting to "manually transfer songs"...coz if u had synced an ipod to iTunes in ur desktop before,it
could cause such a problem.

^^ Actually that shouldn't stop the unit to show up as a removable hard drive on any PC that you connect it to

Works on the laptop, not on the desktop.. so irritating! Windows issues?

Oh yes! something wrong on the USB bus...Try connecting any other USB 2.0 device to the USB port on your desktop andd se if it works

Did that. My iRiver h140 works just fine, and at USB2 speeds as well.

^XPSP2 on laptop and desktop. Not fully UMS compliant.. you need iTunes to transfer music, but yes.. notes and contacts can be transferred via Explorer.

hi Techhead,
i had faced similar problem with a sony digital camera. it would showup as unknown device in the disk management panel but would be not visible in "My Computer". previously it would work fine.
one possible workaround / solution is this ...
1) search for sptd.sys or sptd????.sys in the Windows/system32 folder. it is a virtual disk imaging driver, part of daemon tools or alcohol 120%programs.
2) rename the files (if found).

reboot and see what happens ....

please do. since i do not know whether it will work or not. it is of academic interest to me.
unfortunately i could not test it (i was facing similar problems) since i recently formatted the drives and went back to Raid 0.

hi ther,
i had a ipod photo 20gb b4 and had similar issues, what i did to sort out was to disable usb 2.0 from the bios and then connect ur ipod to the comp and update the ipod's software ,this will take some 5-10 mins coz its usb 1.1 and then enable the usb 2.0 again from the bios,
also try and connect ur ipod's to the mobo usb ports and not the front ones from the cabinets they might be slower plus usually mine never works on the front port.

i gotta 30gig video now but never had problems.

hope this helps

if nothin helps ,do check the forums on apple site, they helped me br;)
