iPod Touch 2G JB queries

I have an iPod Touch 2G which is on 3.1.3 (upgraded officially from the iTunes by shelling out $10 :ashamed: ). I JB'ed it last year with Cydia and I am installing apps via Installous OTA via WiFi.

Since yesterday, it was showing a "Connect to iTunes" message on the screen. From what I have read, this message is shown when the device goes into recovery mode. However, when I simply connected the device to the computer, the screen disappeared and now it is working fine.

Now, hoping it doesn't throw similar errors at me, I want to upgrade it to version 4. It was showing me that I can update via iTunes, but I think that would spoil the JB and the data on the device, apps etc.

My queries -

1. How do I upgrade? Any links to the videos or tutorials?

2. Can I install apps via the computer on the iTouch or Installous over WiFi is the only way?

I have really never bothered with this since it always stays with my sis/mom. Would really appreciate some help :)

when you connect your iPod Touch 2G to iTunes... iTunes tells you to upgrade to which version? I think for your iPod Touch the last upgradable iOS version would be 4.2.1. Coz i think Apple has dropped the software support for iPod Touch 2G and iPhone 3G...

My queries -

1. How do I upgrade? Any links to the videos or tutorials?
2. Can I install apps via the computer on the iTouch or Installous over WiFi is the only way?

1. Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 Untethered on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, iPod, Apple TV with GreenPois0n RC5 | Redmond Pie

2. Yes, you can... you just need to have installous installed in your iPod Touch...

a. Connect your iPod Touch to your PC
b. Click on the cracked ipa file you wanna install
c. iTunes will popup after clicking on the ipa file then install the ipa file using iTunes... its very easy...

It says in the instruction file

> Requirements (check this !)

- a supported device (see above)

- the device should run iOS 4.2.1 (4.2.6 for iPhone 4 Verizon). Please check on the device in the Settings -> General -> About page.

If your device is running an older version, please upgrade iOS first using iTunes.

*** If you want to SIM Unlock, preserve your baseband using TinyUmbrella (iPhone 4 only) or PwnageTool ***

- at least Windows XP

- a working internet connection

So first I should update this to 4.2.1 from iTunes?

Done! Had to JB it twice, but finally it started working. :)

Steps for anyone who wants to get this done -

1. Ensure that you have 4.2.1, otherwise upgrade through iTunes.

2. Download GreenPois0n from Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 Untethered on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, iPod, Apple TV with GreenPois0n RC5 | Redmond Pie

3. Follow the steps given.

4. Install Cydia from the loader present in the apps. (My Cydia wasn't running the first time so I had to restore my iPod touch from iTunes and then again follow step 3. This is the simplest, though time-consuming, approach)

5. Install Installous (I prefer this) from Tutorial – How To Get Installous From Cydia

6. All done! :)

How is the performace on the device with the latest firmware? I'm still on the old 2.1.3 I think. I don't really feel the need to JB it, since I rarely do anything other than add music and videos on it.

^it's running smooth I guess. Not noticed anything weird till now. Have to spend some time with it..
