Yeah... :)

It would be great if Apple would launch a budget iPhone @ iPod Touch's price (229$ - 299$)... with features like Non-IPS Retina Display , A single Core A5 processor , iPod Touch like Thin Design etc etc :)

Guys with Apple nothing is certain until Steve "Blow" Jobs uncle gets on that stage and shouts it out to the world. With that smug grin of his. :P

iPod Touch having 3G connectivity is possible, but a cheaper iPhone is a distant dream because:

1.If apple does that, it would kill off Apple's own iPod touch lineup. Nobody would go for an iPod touch if a similar iPhone is at a slightly higher price. At the moment, people of lower budget go for an iPod while those with a higher budget go for an iPhone. With a cheaper iPhone, the lower iPod segment may get destroyed and a part of the higher segment may merge into this low-mid end one.

2.Apple has established the iPhone as a premium quality product, priced always above all other phones. This makes the rich people 'want' iPhones because they can buy a very expensive phone. If they launch a cheaper phone, all this would be ruined, plus many of the buyers about to go for the more expensive one will instead opt for the cheaper one (after all, it is too an Apple branded phone having most features), thus heavily reducing profits

3. The huge profit margin (over 50%) on the iPhone will have to be cut down a lot to do this, and cutting profit margin is something Apple simply hates to do.

So, as Apple is now happy addressing lower(iPod) as well as higher(iPhone) segments, a cheaper iPhone is unlikely IMO.

Very true what "rhlravi" said. If apple sells the cheaper iphone, that destroys or atleast slows the ipod touch lineup sales. I don't think Apple would like that. But nowadays 3g connectivity is needed, so that can be more beneficial and not depend on Wifi anymore. It makes us more connected.

100% percent this is not going to happen, if this happens they will crush the iphone share.

But apple will make up their mind to sell two iphones per year, one with minor upgrade and one with major upgrade.

I don't think the thin design will work if new iPod has 3G as the peripherals used will increase so will the dimensions. For 3G it will require the same hardware that iphone will have.

In short it would just be a iphone with calling/messaging facilities locked :P

Guys, apple already has launched cheaper version of iPhone ! But it's called as iPhone 3GS :bleh:

Apple already targets that segment with a iPhone 3GS, so I fail to understand all the gossip about a lower priced iPhone.

Obviously the Iphone 4S/5 would be the new 650$ device and the iPhone 4 would be the sub 300-400$ (50$ with contract) device soon, so wheres the need to launch a new mid end device?

All other companies try to capture market across all the price segments, but apple concentrates on the premium segment, delivers well and makes hefty profits in comparison to any other phone manufacturing company.
