Summary : I was going to buy 2060 Super, but after 3000 series release thinking of buying 3070. My Config will be r5 3600, 3070, MSI b550 PRO VDH WIFI.

Question : I have a 1080p Monitor (Benq XL2411p). Is 3070 overkill for it ? Should i get a 2000 series RTX and save money ? Will be saving close to 25k ( -15k on 3070 and -8k on b550 Motherboard ).

Honestly, ...even a 2080 will do great at 1080p...unless you wanna go higher on res.
Yes the 3070 is an overkill for 1080p, but still let the benches come out...maybe hold out for the 3060

Ideally for that tier of gpu's, you should be upgrading to a 1440p monitor as well but our market has limited options and the decent ones are overpriced.
If you have no intention of upgrading your monitor, 3060 should potentially be a good match as infected already pointed out.

Nope. Next gen games will definitely push your gpu to the limit. And in 5 yrs when people with 4k monitors wont be getting 30fps with their 3070, you can still enjoy 1080p gaming.

with the way games will be coming out with more graphical eye candy, needing more power to render frames i think its safe to say 3070 is a good choice.

3070 is going to be overkill for 1080p for now and for next couple of years atleast.. however slowly games will start catching up.. and probably then this card will be fully utilized..
So, if you are planning to stick to it for long then it makes sense to go for it..

As of today, a 2070 super perform flawlessly for 1080p

A guy in anther thread said 2060 Super FE was overkill for 1080p gaming. Barring some guys like Sotr, RDR2, 3070 is definitely an overkill even at 144hz

TL;DR: 3070 is not overkill for AAA games ultra. Its overkill for competitive shooters at competitive settings. 3600 is good for the second case, but not necessarily for the first case.

If you get 3070 for 1080p, then you are targeting high refresh rate (>120 FPS). And, since 3070 is a very powerful card for today's games, you are going to run into CPU bottlenecks in many games (meaning, you may notice GPU at <90% utilized, which cuts the frames, obviously). So, you need a powerful CPU, definitely more powerful than a 3600. I have a 3600 running at 4.2 GHz all cores paired with 5700XT for 1080p 144 Hz. Even with this, I find games that I run into a GPU or CPU bottlenecks. e.g. CSGO runs at >300 FPS with CPU and GPU utilized at 30 to 60 percent at 1440x1080 res. SOTR ultra DX12 runs at 99% but is mostly below 130FPS. With minimums dipping down to 65. My freesync range is 70 to 144. So, you can imagine, the shit I have to go thru when the FPS is below 70. So, check what your monitor's freesync/gsync range is, its VERY important. And, how do I keep the minimum FPS above 70 - Get a better CPU. 3600 just doesnt cut it even in a 2018 game for high refresh rate gaming. Dont get me wrong, its an amazing processor, but good is defined as 60 to 75 Hz gaming in this case. Anything above it, needs more CPU, in my experience.

Like I keep saying in other threads, high refresh rate gaming needs a powerful GPU AND a powerful CPU. Getting only one of those is going to result into slight disappointment (as in my case). In my view, 60 FPS gaming is good, when your 1% lows are above 45. Similarly, 144 FPS gaming is good, when the 1% low is above, e.g. 90 FPS (Just examples brothers, everybody has a different view when it comes to 1% minimums). I got a 3600 because everybody kept saying its enough for 144 Hz gaming, and if you play any thing else than the competitive online shooters (APex, CSGO etc.), you need something more that that.

What games do you please BTW? At what settings are you targetting those?

I have been using a 1080Ti for close to two years now. 99% of my gaming is Apex/Valorant with some light VR stuff like Beat Saber.

Had to upgrade my monitor to 1440p 144Hz because I had so much performance headroom. I wish I bought the 1070 instead since the experience would've been mostly the same for the games I play.

always get the latest if you can afford one, but if you are sure that you will be sticking to your 1080p monitor then a 2080 should be enough.

I just made benchmark videos to show what my 3900x and RTX 2080 do at 1440p ultra on HZD and F1 2020. Avg of 70 fps in HZD and over 100 in F1 2020. So for 1080p even a 2080 is overkill kind of, 3070 if its like a 2080TI def will be.

I agree. This is not a good time to buy gfx cards or cpu. Wait for one or two months you will get more options. Worst case scenario you'll get better prices.

No, absolutely not. It depends on your refresh rate obviously but I would say that anything beyond a gtx 1080/RTX 2060 is overkill at that resolution even at 144 Hz. Now if you plan on upgrading to a higher res monitor you can consider a 3070 but you won't be able to spot a difference compared to a 2060 on your 1080p screen in most games.
I have a 2080 Ti for 1440p 165 hz but I'd happily play 1080p 144 hz on a 1070
