Is $649 a sane price for a graphics card?

THE INQ ASKED for your valuable opinion on Nvidia and ATI's pricing policies, say Nvidia's decision to price a graphics card at $649. Here are a few replies -
Of course it’s not worth it. Only morons with more money than senses will buy this card or the fanboys with nVidia stock that have a vested interest in drumming up sales by posting benchmarks on various forums and espousing its greatness. For the sane people, this is just another tactic by nVidia to cash in by moderately upping the core speed and adding faster ram on to the same old core we’ve had since July. Just watch, during the next gen. release of cards $650 will be the starting price and everyone will accept it

i also will get a ps3. i am sure i will also consider buying another card later to play the pc games.

u cant do anything about this. the price is going to increase.

it was geforce 3 that started with 350$ for ti500 & 250$ for ti200
then i 4got the gf4ti pricing but after that it was ati 9700pro for 400$.
then 6800gt from 450 - 500$
now 7800gt from 500 - 550$

these are the pricing when its introduced
 
Not really... for people who cannot afford to pay so much, there are always cheaper alternatives.

And for rich people, then there are these 650$ cards.

And in the end, it is the company which makes these products who have the last word. It is upto them to price it at whatever price they feel is right.
 
for some ppl smoking a couple of packs of cigarettes a day is 'sane'..
for some others, gutting down the booze is 'sane'//
for a few more modding their 'gaddi' is 'sane'..
for some have girl friends.. ;)

why mention the above? coz its all gotta do wid blowing da money.. afterall, sanity is a relative term ;) what's sane for some aint the same for others.. mah 2 cents..
 
any gaming console is far better investment than in g card .. they get outdated within 6 months :S
 
One of the reasons mentioned for higher prices is that development takes place over 2-3 years. But since 80% of the same tech is going to be reused for next couple of generaions, i feel that high prices are unjustified.
 
yeah $649 is a huge price but maybe it'll come down like the 256MB version.

omfg $800 for a stoooopid card n yea stoopid u cud assemble a VERY decent rig in that much moolah,cmon nvidia stop makin soo much money n give us a break

Very true .... :)

u guys are shouting about nVidia ....

wat abuot AMD's FX series and intels EE ....

even sounds cards have top models with stupid front bay connectors and charge double money .....

even cars have models like these

so think it totally useless to discuss these

if there is need and buyers in the market then there will be products .....
