Re: Is a class 10 memory card a waste of Money???

I read your original post before you edited it. Any particular reason for the same ? I thought it was a pretty good subject for debate.

And mind sharing how your questions got resolved ?

Re: Is a class 10 memory card a waste of Money???

Im using class 4 sd card it does 720p recording directly from the card i don't see why would any one want a class 10 card ,unless something like 1080p recording or fast transfer from pc.

Even I am debating same.

Nook is what I am looking to use the card for.xda suggested class 4 has good random read speed and it gives better overall performance.

Class ---higher class benefits only at sequential read and benefits at transferring big files at multiple times like copying snaps and videos.

Yup. when recording a 1080p video on my cam, it lags for a few seconds and then only starts recording. and after completing recording pauses for a few seconds. If this is a problem of the memory card, will be very much interested in upgrading. for now using a 4GB class 4 card which came with the camera.

Re: Is a class 10 memory card a waste of Money???

if everyone started deleting their threads once their issues were resolved, this forum would be almost empty of threads i guess.

Coming back to the topic,

i guess, high speed memory cards are usefull in digicams where write speed is more important than read speed. The extra speed boost saves precious time writing to the stick. Less time writing to stick = more time for photographer to snap pictures.

For smaller devices like mp3 players or ebook readers, the read speed is more important. They only read once to put it in memory, so for these devices even class 2 cards are sufficient i guess.

^^ All that is the technical and theoretical part.. how many have actually clocked the speeds so as to give a more concrete evaluation ?

Let's say i have a 16GB card of class 4 and i intend to shoot the vids at 720p only.. how would be my class 4's performance be ..? Will it be good enough to save the videos with no pixelations or any other such lossy effects..?

Well, in case of digital cameras, for speed ratings of sdhc cards in actual tests you can take a look at dpreview. Their tests usually have the time taken to save pics in normal and burst modes. They test with one or two cards only. (Just now when i visited the site, seems they have done away with the old table format of publishing the numbers and only give lesser info now).

For more detailed performance on write speeds, you can visit Rob Galbraith's site.

Rob Galbraith DPI: CF/SD Performance Database

Ex: Numbers for Canon Eos 450D

Rob Galbraith DPI: Canon EOS Rebel XSi/450D

About saving pics and videos without pixellations etc, it depends on the camera software and at what resolution you are going to take pics/vids.

if photography was a passion, you yourself would have answered it,

Dealing with a High END DSLR and having those benefits to click 8 frames per second, yes high speeds are required to transfer it. Also to transfer file on the fly with sizes rating upto 25MB per file, a class10 Card really helps a long way.

Shooting a 720p video is not gonna be much of a use here, cos you end up seeing them on Flickr, Picasa, Youtube, which just downgrades you effort!

That is the whole point of asking here, cuz photography is not a passion atm. And passion alone doesnt leads to the magic of cognizance.

Whatever logic pops up first in the mind and feels right, needs to be confirmed by enthusiasts and professionals and hence my question in the earlier post.

You have mentioned about High End DSLR specifically.. so doesnt your logic applies to phones as well ??

And care to explain a lil more on the last line you mentioned.. about shooting a 720p being not useful as one will see it on utube and picasa ..?

I am using a sandisk 16 gb class4 MicroSd on my mobile ( samsung wave ) and adam. I have seen lags while loading movies. I have no issues while clicking pics or recording at 720P. I believe a class10 Microsd should be the answer to the lags.but at present they are quite expensive so staying away from them.
