Is Aadhar and mobile linking mandatory

Yeah it does seem that Aadhaar number is only one component in the equation. How can knowing one's bank a/c number and Aadhaar number allow you to drain that person's account?

Pretty sure there is something missing here from the story. Else there would be widespread fraud if only an Aadhar number was needed to withdraw money.

There is widespread fraud already and People are losing money. That is why even UIDAI which was always in denial mode about security of Aadhaar started putting out advisories about not giving aadhar number or went to the trouble of temporary token numbers

One way that it was done in the past with the BHIM app was to send a payment request which the user accidentally clicks and approves. The BHIM app apparently made this quite easy to unknowingly approve such requests and there were lots of people who lost money because of the BHIM app. Even otherwise, there seem to be other loop holes to be exploited now. The aadhaar enrollment system is itself out in the open and being abused by countless unauthorized people to setup their own aadhaar service centers. If the OTP sub system were also compromised, it would be end of it. Aadhaar OTP can be sent to e-mail in addition to mobile. Even if a person gets one OTP code (which is valid for half hour), he can use it to setup TOTP through aahdaar app and then use the same for subsequent requests.

The biggest blunder of the govt in relation to Aadhaar and UPI was to force the Aadhaar VPA to be activated by default rather than make it optional. All just to stoke their own personal ego's over the UPI. They forced their own UPI app to be released without passing necessary security audits (even those required in the UPI regulations). Then they forced all independent and audited implementations of UPI integration by private banks to be replaced by BHIM integration so that bugs and security vulnerabilities in their implementation can be forced on all banks. After that, the nationalized banks have been forced to ask their staff to install these apps on the mobile phones of customers who might not have the basic knowledge to use them and only serve to compromise them. For example, if a non tech savy person gets a UPI payment authorization request, there is a good chance that he will authorize it accidentally.

So a friend in chattisgarh tried to port his prepaid vodafone to prepaid jio. Gave his passport copy as proof of identity and residence. After a few days got a message saying that his porting failed due to incorrect documents. He got fed up and gave his aadhaar and was instantly ported. I think under 2 days.

This kind of underhanded subterfuge is nothing but a slap to the face of the supreme court ruling.

Seems reliance rules supreme court int his matter. In fact I still keep hearing stories still aadhaar is demanded by many officials even though SC has ruled out it as a mandatory document. Even with a pan cum driving lic or passport should work incl. electricity bill. but seems cos. make their own rules.

Yup, they don't really seem to care about the SC verdict. Keep doing their own thing. If someone actually bothers escalating it to a legal level, they will quickly just process the application without e-kyc. They know most people who already have aadhaar wont bother with the headache.

Reason I asked is, is it possible maybe because the number was previously aadhaar linked, the process went through?
