Laptops Is Acer unreliable?

I know things cannot be generalized but relatively, are people seeing slightly more issues with Acer than other brands?

How's the Acer 4736z and similar current line-up of Acer? I know it's too early to talk about reliability but should one not buy an Acer and go for a Compaq instead owing to higher incidence of problems in the former?

Not quite. Couple of my friends have Acer laptops and have been working without issues. Acer has some really good notebooks up their sleeve - esp. the new 5740G. Never seen a HD5650 GPU make it to a laptop sooner than Acer! At a jaw-dropping price!

I too have an Acer 5920 purchased in May 2008. It has not given me even one problem till date. Acer gives you the drivers disk along with the laptop and there is usually no bloatware pre-installed. I removed the copy of windows on my laptop and installed Ubuntu on the very first day.

Dont go for Acer. A year back my Acer aspire laptop failed to power up and i took it to their service centre. They told me that it will take a day or two to diagonise the issue. Called them the 3rd day, they told still not diagonised fully and said that they will repair it and gave an estimate of 4k max ( without even diagonising it fully !!!) .

After a weeks time they come back saying that it was not possible from them to re-work the motherboard. Then i took back my lappy after paying the diagnositic charge of Rs.300 ( dont know whether they even diagonised it or not ).

Through AD i sold the laptop. The buyer calls me the next day and says that some essential components of the lappy were found missing . This he confirms through a service engineer. He asked me whether i had given the lappy to any service centre anterior to the sale. I told NO. After that i had no contact with him. I think he must have serviced the laptop through some service centre.

So ACER's service centre sucks. Thinking that my lappy is irreparable those cunning brutes have stolen some components. So beware. Dont go for acer products. FYI The one which i had is very sparingly used and it went kaput within 2yrs.

Go for brands like MSI, compaq, dell or sony . Take my words. Avoid ACer lappies.

I will also suggest...don't go for Acer...one of my friend had acer...and the power button used to go kaput after every 3 months...

+1 to msi and its kickass after sales service

hp/compaq have the dubious reputation of having the worst after sales service second only to hcl!

Two of my friends had speaker problems with Acer laptops within 3 months of buying them. But that was around one and a half years back.

Those may have been the unlucky pieces but the customer support isn't great either, especially in India.
But in other countries, which I've visited, Acer is considered to be a good brand having great value for money.

In India, I guess, the top brands as regards quality and customer support still remain HP (including compaq), Dell and Sony (a bit pricey though) but that is just an opinion based on usage.

Well, as I said its an opinion based on usage and you're welcome to keep your opinion.
May be you didn't have good experiences with HP but as the OP rightly said that things can't be generalized just like that, its not about misinformation.

And about HCL, one of my friends got a xbox360 from a HCL outlet (they were listed as retailers on the xbox site at that time) and got a RROD within 15 days of hardcore gaming.
He called up HCL and within 3 hours a guy turned up and took the console for repairs, this is normal. But guess what he had brought with him.
A display piece of xbox 360 to let him play while the RRODed one got repaired!
(I don't understand how they managed to do that)
This happened in Kolkata.

So, please think before making misinformed judgments.

@ Acer - have seen quite a few 3-4 yr old units working fine without issues. Guess you need to handle with some care, thats all.

OT@ HP Compaq - Bought a regular lappy, there was some lcd discolouration, called shop, called service center, was given a new higher model, no questions asked, with a fresh warranty card. the cost difference was 15k odd, which i did not have to pay.

Yes, and thats why we can't generalize things based on one-off cases because customer support depends on many different factors including the brand, the city and sometimes even a particular outlet in the same city.

Acer:no:
Heres my personal experience...
Its been 3yrs since I bought my Acer laptop...Within a couple of months the webcam started having issues, which I had resolved with a system restore. But it wasnt long before it died again...tried a few things but eventually gave up on it...then about a year or a year nd a half back the speakers started acting weird..Was already out of warranty, so took it to a local service center nd they did some regular servicing, which fixed issues like Speakers, very noisy exhaust fan and also had to replace my HDD, which had smart failure...
It dint stop there...after a few days I started having same problem with my speakers and the noisy fan was back...went to another service guy, things dint change for long even after that...
I was then mighty pissed with the laptop and the service center trips, which was just waste of time nd money..I then searched quite a lot on the internet about the webcam issue, which led me to disabling it from the inside...
Thanks to Google search, I found a topic in another forum which helped me open up my laptop to the very last screw....I unplugged the webcam cable, made sure the speaker cables were well connected...dint do much to the fan...put back everything together and voila!! Everything was back to normal, almost...the noisy fan is noise free...speakers work just fine...webcam is disabled nywys...

That was my side of Acer story...I have seen about 80-90% ppl suggesting to buy Acer, for its VFM, but it still frightens me to do so...I wont suggest u to go against it though, coz even Sonys', Dells' n HPs' have issues...can never trust enough when it comes to electronics...have seen many unhappy HP customers too...

So, buy whats within ur budget, with ur requirements nd hope that u not one of the unlucky ones:p

Depends on your usage.acer cannot take heavy gaming for long.If you are not into games or other heavy duty stuffs acer will be fine.

i am not saying hp/compaq and hcl are terrible maybe you/people you know were lucky but the general consensus is that they are pretty bad.

Or may be you were lucky with Dell because their customer support has only now started to improve in India. Three years back, the picture wasn't so rosy for Dell customers.

Where are the Acer Laptops assembled? From where do they land up in India?

And where do Dell and HP/Compaq come from? I guess that might be a small factor?

Acer products tend to suck in the developing world more than the developed world, I am pretty sure of that. To add to it, the service generally sucks for I have heard about it a lot.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That said should I prefer HP/Compaq to Acer? I ask this even to the ones who say Acer is okay.

I find HP/Compaq laptops to suck as compared to a similar Acer laptops, apart the unknown reliable factor. The HP/Compaq touchpad sucks on almost all models. The similar midrange laptops from both companies compared, Acer is lighter. Acer has more expandable options and ports, Acer is cheaper. The Acer screen is better.

Still, should one prefer HP/Compaq? I will choose 2 laptops for my friends from Siliguri, WB.

The CASE is YES & NO. Some models fails & some donts. This is not the case for Acer, its same for Dell,HP,Compaq,Toshiba,Asus,MSI too. These all laptops are made by few companies in china as ODM maker.None of these companies makes thier owns except few premium models. So if you take a survey of all brand owned people, many of them have Pros & Cons. Its also a true fact that low build quality & component failures are high recent times, its only to catch the market with low prices, also all low priced products cant be poor too.

So its like a jigsaw puzzle. But buy taking few market study/customer feedbacks can imporve your buying experience too.

Please avoid any product that also dont have proper service shop near you (ASP).This will also make you trouble in future unless u are a tech savy.

^ Well I agree to that. Most stuff is always made in China.

BUT it does not change things; the quality control measures taken by a Company causes the difference. A better company might only release top-notch stress-tested models, a mediocre company may not be so stringent.
