Hi there.
I have 10k allocated for cpu + mobo combo so I want you guys to suggest me a combo that will give me max performance. So will it be amd or intel?

what are your needs??,please be specific!
Do you have a gpu or are you looking for onboard gfx??
I would suggest an intel core 2 quad Q8400 + gigabyte g31m-es2l...
wait for others to post an amd combo..
It would most probably like amd phenom 550be or the athlon x4 620,coupled with a biostar motherboard featuring 785G or 790G chipset...(has HD 4200 inbuilt gfx very good for HD movies and gaming (latest games at low resolution,Directx 10.1 compliant)

Please wait for others to post thier views!

well I will be installing a graphics card

Gigabyte g31m-es2l would do nicely if you have graphic card as the onboard gfx is crappy.
What is your gaming and desktop resolution?
Your primary usage?

Phenom II X3 720: 6.5k

Biostar TA 785GE 128M : 3.8k or Biostar TA 790 GXBE: 4.4k

G31 mobos has PCI X16 1.0 slot. SO it cud limit any PCIE gfx card by a small margin. Also in gaming, PII X3 720 yields better than Q8400.

No offence but friend he won't be installing a gtx 295 in there i guess he won't go above gtx 260 as he has a low budget for Cpu + Mobo. I doubt if it will limit the Gpu though.:) Just my say of this. But on a budget go for Amd.

I cant imagine him buying a 5870 with that setup :p

But yes, i do agree with you, P2 X3 720 >Q8400 . But 720 is phased out now..get an Athlon X3 for some 4.4k or so...

@rajan: Offtopic but what is a Qx doing in a g31:huh: Do some justice to the poor thing get a P45 or x48:)

@Op: Buy g31 with a c2d like e5200 and overclock it to 3.0ghz you will have money to spare for a Gfx as well.

for a given amount of money, AMD beats Intel any day.

but if the budget is a little flexible to the upper side, Intel pounces AMD

What's wrong with that? If someone uses 5870, he would obviously use a 24+ inch monitor and at very high resolutions, the GPU plays the role and not the CPU (you will get playable rates with a decent CPU along with a good GPU). If I were the OP, and had more budget, I would invest more on the GPU rather than the CPU. Any dual core cpu with decent speeds is enough for todays games.
