Is GTX 980 4gb still relevant or can be considered ancient?

So my 1050ti is kaput, was lookin for a replacement and come across a GTX 980 which is a WINDFORCE edition so TDP is 165 & recommended PSU is 600W. my requirement is for a card where i can play light gamin like Warzone/Apex legend /CODM(Emulator) and most offline games. so basically a card that can play all the latest games , i am not interested in frame rate and happy to play the games at medium settings. My rig is:

i7 / 16gb /550w 80+ bronze

so should i consider GTX 980 or start looking for 1060 OC/1050ti/1060ti OR RX 480/580/6400/6500 etc because i am not much into gaming now a days and probably will by my last purchase for next 1~2 years.
 
A 980 should be fine, as long as you're getting it at a low enough price. It's still supported by Nvidia, not sure for how much longer, though. What resolution do you play at? VRAM will start becoming an issue. I would recommend an 8GB 480/580 in that instance. Even a 6GB 1060 would be a wiser choice. Don't bother with the 6400/6500 unless you have a pcie 4.0 board.

Your PSU will be able to run it just fine.
 
980 and 1060 are very similar in performance.

Only thing is 980 has less VRAM that might show its age, but lighter games would not have any issues at 1080p.

Do check for condition of the card... if we'll kept it can serve you well for another 2 years...

Your PSU will run it just fine, as long as it's not some garbage unit from Zebronics or Circle.

Heck, I was running an R9 290 which is a 300W card with a 450W unit for a year until I upgraded.

I am currently running a rx 570 along with an old e3 1230 v2 (i7 3770 equivalent). Assuming that your i7 is also older than 10th gen, out of the 3 games you mentioned, Warzone is unplayable for me, framerates are far too low and honestly the people who play mainly warzone on pc are extremely sweaty. Apex legend last time I played was still extremely playable. CODM is well easy to run.
However for the foreseable future, the 980 is not enough for medium 1080p setting in the new AAA games anymore. Even fifa (fifa 23) is stuttering now lol

Not sure what you mean by COD ghosts 2 (that doesn't exist), and batman origins is a 10 year old game. These are not modern, they're old now. If you're going to mainly play games from 10 years back, then yes a 980 is perfectly fine.

I am running a i7 4790, i used to play Warzone flawlessly when i had i5 4570(upgraded proc because shifting my priority to VM home labs), My bad i meant MW CW/2/3, Battlefield 5 etc ....now i realize i was playing old games because most modern games are online paid versions ...any ways every reply is persuading me to not to go for 980 and start looking for atleast 6gb Vram card. how about 1050/1060ti/ 1060 OC /1660 OR RX 480/580. BTW @PunkX 75 if i am getting 6400/6500 for the same price range they are backward compatible with PCIe 2/3 right ?

6400/6500 are backward compatible but while their PCIe 4.0x4 interface may just be sufficient, under back compat on lower bandwidth PCIe 3 x4, they just die in performance. No point wasting money on these pieces of crap. They're no good for gaming, only video output.

Get the 980 if it is a good deal. No issues on a brand name 550W.
