Is it good to buy any Unlocked 3G USB Modem from ebay.com?

Hi guys,

I want to buy Unlocked USB 3G Modem which can be used as a datacard by putting any GSM sim.

I saw many people selling on ebay.com, but my question is that their 3G frequency will work in India too ???

Will I get the same 3G speed while surfing/downloading i.e. 7.2Mbps.

I am going to get a bsnl 3g sim. does UMG 1831 got heating issues and freq. disconnections? which one will You recommend?

#[member='cool']_cat, i am using UMG 1831 in 2G mode, and it does heat up. But in 3g mode it does gets hot.

Previously i have the frequent disconnect issue with this modem, after that i got it replaced, now it is working perfectly

Ok. thanks for the feedback. a simple search result showed UMG1831,K4505 and E182-x as some of the models. I want a modem supporting both 2G and 3G. any review with said modems OR I will check with some dealers here and update thist thread later.

to clarify,i want to tell you that 21.1 mbps wireless speed is very high.so any device supporting that much speed will heat a lot.

reviews says that E353 heats less.i use it and it heats and sometimes disconnects also.(disconnected 1 or 2 time when i bought it.....and is working without any problem ..)

so to avoid overheating,i remove the black cover than use it.so no overheating and disconnection.

it depends on you budget which one you choose.

1.i would recommend VODAFONE K450 .it supports 2G,3G and 3.75G .it also supports calling(2G/3G).it is 28.1 Mbps ready.but cost is high - approx 3000.

2. i would [font=helvetica, arial, sans-serif]recommend huawei E353. i am personally using it.and it works great. [/font][font=helvetica, arial, sans-serif]CON:- it does not support 2g call. and 2g network.--- approx 2300[/font]

[font=helvetica, arial, sans-serif]3.UMG 1831.(it suppurts 2G network also)-- approx 2200[/font][font=helvetica, arial, sans-serif].[/font]

[font=helvetica, arial, sans-serif]idea Huawei E172 is one of the best in 7.2Mbps range.[/font]

Thanks for the heads up. Do You have external antenna connected to the device? is it really needed?

I searched for Huawei UMG 1831 and K4505. both are not available in local shops and huawei distributor is interested in selling some e303 c(ap .

but, if I buy vodafone K4505, is it possible to unlock it? any hints?

no i don't have any antenna.

you need an antenna only when signals are very weak .

even around 20% signal, i get good speed.

you can easily check your signal strength if you have a 3G capable mobile phone.

try to use internet via it and check for 3.5G signal strength.
 
I got Huawei K4505 locally for Rs2700 unlocked. the signal strength for idea 3g is only 2 points although gets good speeds. I've got a BSNL 3G Sim and awaiting activation. Let Me check the speeds. if not, this modem has the provision of external antenna(CRC9 connector). I am curious if the external antenna will help? it costs Rs600 IIRC.

this modem is detected, auto configured in Linux fine(network-manager).

Is there any software or web interface for this Modem?

note that, Vodafone India website is showing K4505 model as the latest available 3g dongle. however, it is not available in Kerala.
