Guys i had to reinstall the windows xp.
After that i have not partitioned it.
Now i was thinking is it really necessary to partition the hdd.I mean is it safe to keep the hdd without doing any partition.Or it is necessary.

thanks for the reply. Then why majority of the system has partitions.
i mean then why it is recommended to have partitions.

So that if by chance you need to re install windows due to some problem like virus or if any win. file becomes corrupt then you don't need to format other partitions and data remains more safe

it is advisable to keep at least 3 partitions

one for windows and program files one and two for personal data

I would recommend that you should never ever store data on a system partition and techno_guy has already explained the reason why.

Given this recommendation, you can then decide whether your hdd should be partitioned or not.

Does it hold the system? Is there more space than required for the system on this hdd so that you can easily make another partition? What I mean is if the capacity of the drive is 40 GB then you are obviously not looking to put a lot of data on it and you should be installing another hdd in any case.

Is there any other hdd in the PC to hold data?
