Is it possible to claim warranty of xbox with serial no. only?

I wanted to know whether is it possible to claim warranty for the xbox 360 with just the serial number?
Does it require to register the xbox online to claim warranty?If yes what is the time frame under which the registration should be made after the purchase date?

The replacement is given based on the serial number and the proof of purchase (invoice). If the seal is tampered with, the person who comes at your doorstep with the replacement unit has the right to deny the warranty so keep that in mind when you intend to do modding of any sort - most modders tend to carefully remove and replace the seal intact whereas some others do not.

No online registration is required.
