Is it possible to completely eradicate piracy?

I dont think it can be done.
The moment a movie/music is released, we have pirated copies before the official release.
So ironic as it may sound, pirates are more efficient than the makers.

Maybe. How long since piracy started? 10-15 years I guess. Still not one decent online store where people can buy stuff and download it on subscription here. I know Hulu, Netflix etc ate there but they cater to USA only. All these unwanted divisions by country & not releasing movies or series at the same time everywhere only add fuel to the fire.
The studio's should be blamed for piracy. If they weren't so greedy, there would be less piracy.

Pirates only want to see stuff. They don't have an option most of the time other than to pirate.

Not eradicated but could had been greatly reduced if piracy was an act between pirates and law enforcers. It's not. Most of the time it's a nexus between a lot of people.

The world is slowly heading towards eradication of fiat currencies. That piracy today will be the economics of tomorrow

Actually, I started buying original DVDs when moserbaer started releasing movies at 25rs and the other Telugu movies started getting cheaper at around 125. its simple you know.

And the person I send it to is my mother so she can read it in her ipad
Read the terms and conditions that came with your ebook. If it says that you can transfer it to a device that you own, then you'll be alright. If it explicitly mentions that you can't transfer the file then you'll be in trouble according to the law.

Hmm so let me get this straight. I buy a hard Cover book and I can share it with anyone I want. But u by an ebook and you can't share...
No wonder piracy looms large

The real pirates here are the greedy companies.

You don't actually "buy" an ebook. You only buy a license to read the ebook.

If they enabled sharing what is stopping you from sharing it with everyone? With a physical book, that won't be the case. However, companies like Amazon etc. tie the ebooks to an account. So, if you log in to the account on the new device, you should be able to download the book again.

Piracy of music/video - Quite possible, if everything was made easy to access at reasonable prices. I remember Moser Baer movie CDs /DVDs selling quite well. Such discs made available within a week of a movie release would sell well. Similarly, releasing the movie/music simultaneously on various platforms, like DTH, youtube, etc. will also reduce pirated copies. Like @6pack mentioned, it is also due to the actual creators of the movies/music themselves. There were/are so many people willing to buy digital/physical content, if it is reasonably priced and doesn't come with unreasonable restrictions. But it will be very difficult to achieve. Remember the huge hullabaloo and opposition when Kamal Hassan wanted to release Vishwaroopam in DTH?

Piracy of software - Somehow I don't think software piracy can be eradicated. Unless freewares can replace paid softwares entirely in functionality and ease, it will not happen.

How do you define reasonable? Isn't it the prerogative of the content creator to price it however he wants?

The thing is our laws aren't enforced otherwise piracy wouldn't be as big as it is now. Imagine if they enforced all the things I've listed earlier wouldn't you stop pirating?

I can't check because I don't have any but I've heard that DVDs are censored in India as well. Any truth to this?

@indy1811 Reasonable is when you price products according to the market. Of course, it is the creator's prerogative. No one is debating that. All I am saying was, if it was priced "reasonably", it would sell more. New Bollywood movie DVDs cost around Rs.200 to Rs.300. Instead, if they sold at less than 100 bucks, I am sure there would be more number of people willing to buy.

@psyph3r Not at all. I don't have any statistics to support, but as far as I can see, most movies are screened for not over 2 weeks, even in a small town like mine. It is quite rare nowadays to see films reaching the 50 day and 100 day target. Gone are the days of DDLJ and HAHK. The number of films released each week far outnumbers the number of screens in many places. Producers can definitely earn more if they are open to releasing their films in CDs/DVDs or online screening. Again, just my opinion.
