Is it possible to share internet on priority basis?

I use my laptop for downloading. However when I connect my iPad or any other device, the browsing will be slow. Is there any solution for it? I have to manually stop downloading or limit the speed.

I want something like this, when my laptop is downloading some stuff if I connect any other device which has higher priority than laptop, then bandwidth for laptop should be limited and other device should get higher bandwidth. When I disconnect my iPad, then speed should be back to normal on my laptop.

how do I achieve this? do I need certain hardware? or specific router? any help appreciated

I have an almost similar query. Hope you don't mind me hijacking the thread, Avi. I have a D-Link DSL-2730U router. I normally use uTorrent for my downloads. However, it sucks up all the bandwidth and if I want to surf properly, I'd have to pause the Torrent entirely. This wasn't an issue when I used to download through HTTP mode (IDM). It would automatically regulate the speeds somehow. Anyway, what I'm trying to achieve is for my browsing to get higher priority and the Torrent slows down. Is that possible?

If you have DD WRT - you have two QoS protocols - HFSC and HTB. AFAIK, HFSC does not work properly on DD WRT, and so people use HTB.

On pfsense, I use HFSC - feel that I have more control over QoS. I dont use CBQ (older version of HTB, afaik) and PRIQ.

You will need to specify minimum bandwidth for these to work.
