is it possible to skip certain violence parts of the movie while playing

Some movies are overall good but have some violence/sex/abusive language, I was thinking if any software video player can tag those scenes & the player read those tags & seemllessly skips those part so the movie can be safely played for kids below certain age.

Any such player or technology exist? otherwise I am thinking to edit the movies as last option.

Self-censoring upconverting DVD player filters inappropriate content | ZDNet

Nothing of that sort yet (AFAIK and thats already too much) but you can use the AVS video remaker software and get it done i.e., edit it and without loosing out the quality in most of the formats. This way you can purify the movie itself instead of covering it up :D

I would suggest to follow the film ratings...

If its a 'A' rating don't show it to kids.... Skipping only the violence and sex scenes will not make the movie suitable for children ... Its meant for adults and should be in ideal case watched by adults...

Yup, no such thing available AFAIK. Your best bet is to cut the part of video without re-encoding it, therefore maintaining the quality. VirtualDub support this feature. :)

I had previously written a short tutorial on how to cut part of video without re-encoding. That might help.

Edit:-

Here is the short tutorial written by me previously :-

1. Open your video file in VirtualDub.

2. Play the video file and stop where you want to cut your video(Drag the position slider to your desired location).

3. Click Edit > Set selection start

4. Play your video to the part you want to remove.

5. Click Edit > Set selection End

6. Click Edit > Delete

7. Click Video > Direct stream copy and Audio > Direct stream copy.

9. Click File > Save as AVI

Done!

watch those movies on Cable/Satellite TV.:bleh: there are insane amounts of censoring currently on those channels:@

Some crazy person made a PIL on the content of movies around 3-4 years back which resulted in a cable blackout for a week.

from then onwards all movies broadcasted on satellite Tv are made suitable to watch By a PG audience nothing more.

if that you want hassle free.

else movie players have a time seek option if you know the timeline u can seek further to the time so you can get the movie to skip those parts.

I'm thinking..as a community effort, we could easily come up with a file in which we could mention which all portions of a movie to be skipped for kids. Something like a subtitles file. We could even have different entries for different age groups.

And use one of the open source players like VLC. It could easily be modified to read this ratings file also. If you enter the age, the player could use this file to skip the inappropriate portions according to the age.

Just throwing in an idea :)

Way too much hassle... if it has sex , dont show it to your kid. Its just a movie...
I know its just a movie, problem is not sex, instead how sex is depicted. I am not the one who likes censoring mindlessly, nor a paranoid father but I know for sure a young mind is affected very differently. Kids have an uncanny ability to copy that's how they learn things without applying logic.

@arvnd I thought so that some open source community filter must be there already but i found none so far, my idea is exactly the same based on sub title kind of files which the player reads the timeline from. I encourage developers who know programing to compile such feature either in existing player or as a separate player. It can be based on a common database which can be looked on internet.

@XTechManiac
thanks for the step by step instruction I will edit the file as a last resort bcoz that means I have to copy my CD/DVDs to hdd & then redo the dvds, best option would be a kind of srt (subtitle) file which has the entire timeline in a text file & any player would read the content from it to know what to play & what to skip.

I agree but there are many films with "A" but they are very good movies for kids barring 1-2 scenes of volience/sex. Jodha Akbhar comes to my mind which is a wonderful movie but has "A" certificate now all i want is 2-3 scene skipped of beheading/war scene & throwing the body head on...............rest of the movie is perfect for kids.

Thanks for this info but it looks like an editing software which I will do as last resort bcoz that needs copying cd/dvds on to hdd, I prefer if a text file could hold the info & the player could read the time line from it to know what to skip.

Best would be age wise content filter such as

5-8

8-12

12-16

18+

So you will have the choice to still see the unskipped movie if you want to.

Seems like an interesting project to code though.. basically the player just has to read a text file , based on a keyword skip time frame x to y and then resume playback. Could be made as a plugin infact... i might work on it for VLC if i get some time later on...... no assurances

Thanks I look forward to such a plugin,

I was actually surprised that none of the player has this ability I somehow assumed that many would already have such feature (vlc/kmplayer etc) now I am sure many home users would want such plugin if it works with existing video players.

Found another editor which does the same as AVS, need to try out as it says Editing process takes less than minute, keeps original video quality and lip-sync.

Windows Media Player Plugin / WMP Trimmer Plugin

I have tried all the editors, the AVS supports the Maximum (without re-encoding and without loosing lip-sync) and then next is Solveigmm Video Splitter [Standalone] (the one above is a plugin from Solveigmm which has limited functionality]

Probably anything of that sort havent come up because its just not Sexual content you want to cut off from a movie, there are suggestive stuffs too like Smoking, Drugs. Then there is violence, then you know the atmosphere, lot of stuffs.... how would you purify all that for a 10 year old ? It would be a difficult task for even the community per se. You can purify certain movies and then you cannot purify some others. For e.g., Can you make 'Saw' suitable for a 10 year old ? But for a movie like Titanic you can certainly.

So the community would just fail to come up with any solution for a movie like Saw. However its an interesting project and the use of it can be applied easily elsewhere, Like cutting boring stuffs from the movie ?? etc [The first movie on this should be Transformers ROTF :D] I just thought to give the op and others my views on this.

^^ I think if we TE'ians start with such a project, there will be more demand for the reverse filter which show only the sexual content :D
Just kidding - NOM !!

hmm! don't you people know of chapters in mkv files? it can be used to skip the opening credits or song in an video if its been recorded without even removing the video from the file.

all you need to do is to rip the dvd to a mkv file and add chapters at the cue points. then you can just select the chapter to jump directly to that point. its available in every media player i suppose.

That is what my first thought was ... but as requirements vary , wouldn't a system where you could define cue points based on time segments be much more flexible to the end user ?

I don't know much about chapters in mkv files & how they work but I can suggest 2 options for a future plugin

1. based on srt files we can have a text file having the entire timeline to which we add some marker which will indicate the amount to skip.

2. based on editor approach the player timeline can have an additional feature of markers (in points & out point markers) we mark the in & out point (several such points on player timeline) then a text file is generated & saved either in database or somewhere else, then the player seamlessly read the file & play accordingly.

Finally found what I was looking for.

Zoom Player Home MAX v7 has Scene-Cut Interface (Virtual Audio/Video Editing) which can skip the selected scenes.

Zoom Player On-Line Documentation

The Scene Cut Editor allows you to dynamically modify (without actually changing the source file) the way media content is played. To do this, you need to have a media loaded (Currently playing or paused Media file/DVD/etc).

You can manipulate it in the following ways:

1. Cut:

Dynamically remove segments of the time line so that these segments will be skipped when encountered.

2. Jump: Create Jump points which can jump anywhere within the time line (including backwards). This way you can re-edit the chronological playback order in any way you desire (jump points have a sensitivity of aprox. 2 seconds).

3. Audio Mute: Mute the Audio for a specific duration.

4. Hide Subtitle: DVD Only, Hide the DVD Subtitles for a specific duration.

5. End: End Playback (move to next track), mostly useful for DVD Playback as it allows you to play multiple DVDs in sequence, bypassing the menuing system which prevents DVDs from ending on their own.

There is one additional checkbox on the Scene Cut dialog. The "Inverse Cut" checkbox inverses the function of the "Cut" feature. Instead of selecting an area to cut from the video. When Inverse Cut is enabled, only the specified areas would play.

Similar to the Chapter Editor, a file is kept for every DVD Disc and Media file with the ".cut" extension. If such a file is encountered when Zoom Player starts to play new content it will be applied to the loaded disc or file.
