like putting hand tightly on the speaker grill. is it safe for phone speaker ? like the sound waves travelling back and damaging the speaker etc

Let me try.
Yes, it will be safe.
Theoretically, sound waves will reflect from your hand blocking the grill.
- There will be some energy loss during reflection
- There will be some waves absorbed by skin which is not a perfect reflector
- There will be some phase shift during the reflection
- All in all, it will crudely act a noise cancellation system .. which will not be perfect.
- And the waves returning back, after all losses and cancellation, will not enough power to damage the speaker's diaphram.

Agree, if someone had dissuaded the guy who wanted to rub two dry sticks together we wouldn't be where we are today.
