What does iozone say ?

Doh, it spews a bunch of gibberish in heiroglyphics :D Right now I'd rather play with some shiny linux bits than trying to figure iozone out - plymouth/grub2 bootup bling for ubuntu FTW!

Oh well in your own time then :)

I used that tool a while back to make a point but it was with good old HDD's. Seen ppl posting how larger cluster sizes supposedly increased throughput with large media files. That if you had nothing but media files on a HD that a larger cluster size of 64K (largest with NTFS) was faster to grab stuff off over say the default NTFS of 4K.

With iozone I found very little difference in throughput between the two cluster sizes. It was one of those should work in theory but not in practice. A software tweak like this did not matter and the only factor that does make a difference is hardware, faster RPM's or maybe one day SSD's.

Prime concern for anyone's rig should be :

1. Performance (CPU, RAM, GPU and Sound card)

2. Output device (Display-Monitor and Audio-Speakers/headphones)

3. Input peripherals (keyboard, mouse, mouse pad)

4. Storage capactiy (incase one watches/games/listens to alot simuntaneously)

5. Extras

So anks, if you are looking for an awesome rig, clear out the bottleneck first.

IMO: Current bottleneck is very high in the above chart at #2: The display! You are losing on Sooo many colors and eyecandy.

You really want to spend 13k? Get an IPS-panel. Dell 2209WA or Dell U2410

Thats just my 2 cents on why it isnt worth buying SSD at the moment. :hap2:

Umm, bottleneck is usually the point in the system that is the slowest. Right now, I/O from the HDDs is the bottleneck. Even with SSDs, harddisk usage is still the bottleneck, but the neck is much wider than it was before.

yes, kingston 30gb and also intel has apparently released (or will do so) a 40gb model.... so there really are lots of good options already (or soon) for anyone tempted :)

for example, if someone has already got a new rig recently (with SATA3gbps ports) then its fine to get one now.

if someone is planning on upgrading rig say after a few months or in a year or so, then wait to get mobos with sata6 then you can get one of the faster drives!

can u guys tell me the cost of 8-16 gb ssd cards with sata interface & also of availability in india? Any resident dealers have them?

try to get minimum one of the new Kingston SSDnow 30 GB models... they were recently launched and should be available here soon. By "here" I mean if not a dealer then there is that GO/IC started by Naga...

^^ where is the link for ssd go? i didn't find them! Plz do provide that!!!
i actually dont want a 30-40gb ssd, a 8/16 gb ssd would b enough. this is Not for media storage for a pc,but for installing propreitory sybas applications in an embeded system like the NMT with the default address to its SATA port. This would give the daul benefit of fast booting & stability of the system! So in actuality, i want the lowest priced SSD atm!!!

"I told ya so" !

Anandtech: AnandTech: Intel & Micron Announce 25nm NAND Flash Production, SSDs to get Bigger/Cheaper in Q4

Intel and Micron jointly formed IMFT (Intel-Micron Flash Technologies), LLC back in 2006. The two companies share production from the venture. Intel gets 49% of IMFT’s flash production and Micron gets 51%.

If IMFT can ramp up production of 25nm NAND flash, 2012 may be the year of the first truly affordable mainstream SSDs.

Micron makes the "Crucial" branded SSD which I have... :)

ooh, this looks like an ideal app for this tech. Low power consumption and all.
