The quality of CFL has probably come down and they loose their brightness level much earlier then those claimed half life period.
I just compared a brand new 23watt philips CFL vs my now old osram LED and light difference again ain't much.The 23watt philips cfl is only fractionally brighter.
But again on a bigger room the philips(horizontal facing) is bit brighter but in a smaller room they both are about the same the led works best when its vertical.
