I have a two year old DVD drive that I bought with my RIG, it is the standard LG OEM piece that is sold loose ~1000/-.

Now every time I try to burn any media --> CD, DVD the custom Windows 7 format operation ensues and then comes to an abrupt end stating that

"Media could not be formatted."

After cancelling the drive refuses to eject the media and I have to resolve this stalemate by restarting my system. Thence the media reads

Free Space: 0 Bytes

Used Space: 0 Bytes

Now I have ruined ~4 -- 5 blank discs this way, so I suspect my drive is at fault. Is this a correct diagnosis OR can other forces be at play.

Thanks for reading through and helping out.]

are you using a third party software or the default burner that comes integrated into windows??? if you are using the windows, try using nero and poweriso. Nero being one of the best softwares for disc burning.

I have used default Windows 7 burning protocol as well as CDBurner XP, I stopped using Nero due to the bloatware that comes riding along with its set-up.

Okay just to clarify, I have another RIG which is used by my father it is older than my set-up by ~4 years, it has a Samsung OEM DVD drive. I use CDBurner XP with this as well [used it to burn some media just now] and it works flawlessly.

Note this secondary RIG runs on Windows XP SP 2. Cheers!!

Try to see if powerISO gives the same issue. It has its own engine [Nero 5, maybe?]

Dont bother with Nero, bloatware that it is.

Also, do try to clean the lens and see. Plus, check if the cables are loose?

Yes, if you have the issue, mostly gone.

Nah!! thank you guys #cyberwarfare, #vivek.krishnan and #puneetritehere. Problem was solved last night, checked all the SATA port configuration and the DVD drive was on a RAID port, switched it to IDE and presto we are in business. Cheers!!

MODS PLEASE CAN THIS THREAD. Thank You.

k.. cheers.. .by the way. .i dont know why so many of you hate nero.. it has some of the best options to burn a disc.. the bloatware that you are talking about.. do you mean the additional features or some adware???? i dont really understand what bloatware is.. !!!

It has been long since i used NERO (which is not a hero) for burning media. I use power2go and it seldom has these bloatwares and the interface is simple and good looking compartiviely than NERO...

so POWER2GO is the WAY2GO...

Use powerISO or CDBurnXP and you will know the difference. That said, many of us do not need to burn DVD/VCD etc, for which Nero is useful. For my audio/MP3 discs, I use WMP as it manages my collection also.

i already use poweriso.. i mainly use it for using images rather than burning. i get the point that you guys are putting forward.. that poweriso has only the needed options, while nero has a lot of other options that we dont use.. but, i have observed a difference in the quality of burning from nero and other smaller softwares. sometime earlier, even i started using other softwares for burning, but began to realize that they are not as efficient as nero even though most of the times nero has hordes of other options that we dont use. sometimes, when the burn process was interrupted sometimes due to hard disk read delays, when i looked at the burnt discs, there were two separate circles of the burnt film visible whereas this never happens with nero..

moreover, nero is also useful for people who wanna make dvds and vcds compatible with traditional dvd players that do not support a variety of formats. also, menus for dvds and vcds can be created in nero.

I agree with you people that to just burn files and images, poweriso is fine.. small and easy.. but nero is a full sized single solution for all the burning needs that anyone may ever come across. and its also priced accordingly. (its a different thing we never buy but crack). and because nero provides a one stop solution for everything related to disc burning, it is even commercially much more successful than any other software.

PS: vivek, sorry i didnt read the part where you already mention that you guys dont want to burn dvds and vcds, but its just that nero provides the options if needed. thats all.

Actually, I was referring to the space (read;bloatware) and time taken up by Nero to install. I need a simple burning software + mounting tool most of the times. Nero, AFAIK, does not provide the mounting tools, so we need to install that separately.

Infact, I have never seen any issues with burning using CD Burn/PowerISO etc softwares. But another aspect that i neglected to mention is that with the huge amount of storage at my disposal, I rarely burn and DVD's, except for friends OR for sharing pics and videos.

#puneetritehere, by bloatware we mean --

1) the crappy bundled media-player which replaces all the VLC codecs you tagged.

2) takes ~5 minutes to initialize.

3) an interface that is not easy on the eyes, I mean I do not need colour options like sparkly gold, dull bronze, amoeba green. I am fine with a base interface with minimalist symbols as long as I know what goes where.

Rest I agree people have their own opinions and this is mine. Cheers!!

An I have never faced this issue Sire, I have used three software's for burning DVD's and they are --

Nero [upto v 8.0]

CDBurner XP

Windows 7 burning protocols

never faced any issues OR felt that I was unable to do something that I implemented with Nero.
