Today my friend called me and explained this scenario:

He did all cleaning inside the cabinet like removing dust from hsf, mobo, gpu and gpu hsf etc.

After completing the job he forgot to connect the gpu fan connector to its power plug and turned on the pc.

After every 10 mins the display use to go off itself but there wasnt any hangs or bsod.

He again rebooted the pc and same thing happened and the third time he reboot, he quickly entered riva tuner and was shocked to find the gpu temps were going at 125c.

He quickly turned off the pc and then opened the cabby and found some smell coming from the gpu but ti wasnt any burning smell but smell which comes when we buy a new card(sweet smell) and removed it and cooled under a/c flow. Only after 1/2hr then he connected the fan and mounted the gpu again on the mobo and started the pc and got relaxed as now there wasnt any off-display going in between. and the temps too were stable between 48c-52c idle.

He gamed for an hour and all went smooth as before and temps too were between 65-75c

Still want to ask has there been any damage done inside the gpu to its memory/proccy/condenser/transistors etc..

config:

Athlon II x4 620 quad

xfx 9800gt 512mb

4gb ddr3

vx450

500gb seagate

Since you've just used it for some minutes, and 125 C is very high for any card. You might / might not experience problems for a long time. Lets see what others have to say.

Now that its working fine, we need not worry about it. However, the high temps could have weakened the components, probably reducing its life span.

Oh. the card is under 6 months warranty. Shall he give it for replacement? Else if anything happens after 6 months then he will have to buy another one.

^ the card is working fine now right? so a RMA claim wont be entertained i think. even if they do take it RMA.. you will get the same product back as it will be working properly when the technician checks it.

Run a GPU benchmark (furmark) or stability test, you'll get to know if it's alright. If it fails, you can RMA it.

If anything has to go wrong, it could be the VRAM.

Does 9800GT run at 125 celcius????? i am not too sure on that. Is that a card with no power connector to it (9800GT Green Edition)? if it is so, we need not worry about it. The reason being that the card is run from the motherboard power. The smell is probably from the thermal paste. The bios could have reported an incorrect value.

As Ameet148 said run the benchmarks and find out. Anyways 9800GT is the verge of extinction now.

I thought its already extinct.

Time to upgrade..

Not as long as we'll be playing console ports under reasonable resolution. It's only going to extinct only when PS4 and 720 gets released.

i think there are games that arent port and are made for pc seperately. which means the potential to exploit the current set of H/w is high. which also means GC's get extinct (unplayable at max resolutions) every 1 yr to be optimistic.

Not really. Though new and more powerful graphic cards keep cropping up every few months, a high end graphic card bought today would serve well for at least the next two years, maybe even three/four in the case of some well optimised games. It's useless to buy a new graphic card every year, unless you're willing to spend and always want to have the best.

the facts still remains the same that the cards get expired so very easily within a span of 1 yr just because the games are growing in their abilities and technology is tending towards greater heights unlike 5 yrs ago.

Buying a new card every year is a personal choice. But u may not be able to play the games maxed out (which is always the criteria in measuring the longitivity of a GC) more than a year releases.

First of all he shouldnt have attempted to remove the HSF from the GPU. Just blowing with a good blower is sufficient to remove dust..

^^ True but, removing the HSF would also allow the op to re-apply the thermal paste if the older one had gone dry.

I played Witcher 2 on a 9800GT, on low-medium settings with AA turned on @ 1440 X 900 at about 25-30 FPS. It does go to around 20 FPS at a few regions, but I manage. I wouldn't call that extinct.

Civilization V runs pretty well on medium to high. Mass Effect 3 ran on high.

I'm gonna stick with this until Nvidia releases their 6XX series and it comes down a lot in price or someone sells there 560 or something.
