Hi
I'm using Hitachi(2.5") 80GB IDE hard disk with Transcend case as portable solution.Bought both separately.
Recently whenever i'm writing files into this disk i had noticed strange noise (not loud:ohyeah:) but if u keep u r ear to case u can hear. Is this sign for Disk end of days???

I have requested for RMA but want to confirm myself before sending it. Are there any tools to check?

Also as i haven't send anything for RMA. Please suggest how to pack the hdd and which courier is best to send it to chennai?

Pl suggest so i can send them in this week itself.

Thanks
Sidh

No,Your HDD Days are not over.. it's usual for a HDD to make small Noise as it has Moving Parts..

Drive Fitness Test

This download creates a self-booting DOS diskette to run the DFT utility. The Drive Fitness Test (DFT) provides a quick, reliable method to test SCSI and IDE hard disk drives, including Serial-ATA IDE drives. The Drive Fitness Test analyze function performs read tests without overwriting customer data. (However, Drive Fitness Test is bundled with some restoration utilities that will overwrite data.)

Note: Currently, the Drive Fitness Test does not support Microdrives, Travelstar 8E, Travelstar 10E, or Travelstar C4K Series hard drives.

i tried to check with dft. but i'm getting loading dft... after selecting 1. SCSI and ATA support..
i could not understand how to test as these stuff are very high level to me..
also my hitachi hdd is portable connecting as external.

folks from hyderabad, if u have an idea then i will come to your place and can you check whether my hdd is in safer side or not??

If the sound can be heard only if you keep ur ear to the case, then I dont think it's a problem. All HDDs make a small sound when the head moves (for read and write).

But if you are hearing loud clicking noises, it could be trouble.
I think ur HDD is fine.

actually in normal day i have to keep my ear near to it.

But in midnight as there won't be external noise, while running my lappy and connecting this ext drive, i heard 'tik tik' clicks clearly.

Also yesterday i tried to connect both the usb cords to pc, and initially there was no sound while transfering data but later again same 'tik tik' clicks are there.

I haven't heard of any noise/clicks sound before and noticed this only a month back.

I guess hdd is fine but to cross check as i may travel out of station in a couple of weeks then this might be a serious problem.

pl suggest any further solution.

click sound from HDD does mean that smthing is wrong... you should run HDTune or similar benchmark to check the performance

@op

If the clicking sound is audible (be it nite or day) its not a good sign.. A few things i have learnt from my experience if the sound exists is:

>>Try n avoid removing or using the HDD frequently (since more or less its a physical damage)

>>Try n backup ur data.. Make sure u don do it in large chunks but smaller sizes.

>>Unless ur sure ur HDD is not at all cooperative, then time to look at other options

>>Pray for its good health :hap2: .. its a major disappointment if my HDD dies..makes me try again n again to keep it alive..but alas
