well, i have following rig in my signature ^^

and i am facing very crappy gameplay even with my overclocked proccy, ram and stock settings on HD 6850 at 1366x768 resolution.

thanks to sriharsha_m (TE member ) for helping me out on this concept.. :P

my mobo is G31 based so, its southbridge is ICH7 .. and to have good fps.. i need good bandwidth from my southbridge.. and this cheap motherboard might be preventing from utilising CPU and GPU to its fullest potential. which is leading to very bad performance in games...

if that's the case, then my proccy might not be culprit ... and i somewhat feel relief to hear that..

So guys, what do you think of this .. ? sriharsha_m said processor is good enough to handle HD 6850 and i need to look for ICH9 or ICH10 motherboard..

If yes, which motherboards are available under 4-5K ?

I just want to meet the minimum requirements to use the GPU to its fullest.

* i apologize for my grammar .. i needed to hurry since UPS was running out of battery.

Am not very sure, but probably you need to upgrade both your CPU and motherboard. And why playing such a low resolution with that card.Upgrade your monitor too.

Can you give us some performance numbers , which games what sort of settings and what numbers are you getting so other people with your card can confirm.

Very poor overall system performance can be the hdd run hd tune and see if numbers look ok. Im using a backup system E6600 on a G33 intel board with GTX480. Seems ok ofc 480 is bottled but im playing stuff like TF2 and Heroes of Newerth no problem.

All games are run in 1366x768 resolution and fps is captured my MSI afterburner.. my GPU loads shows maximum 35% in all games.

Crysis 2 -- Ultra ~ 12-25 FPS

Assassins Creed 2 -- Ultra ~ 25-50 FPS

Dirt 3 -- Ultra ~ 45-55 FPS

FEAR - Maximum ~ 45-58, Vsync - On

I think the proccy is also holding it back. My old proccy, x4 635, gave 45-60 fps on BC2 [1920*1080 -Medium Settings]. I upgraded my CPU to i5 2400 and now I get 70-80 fps on same settings. There has been a performance gain of 20-40% in almost all games I play.

*GPU is Sapphire HD 6850 1GB DDR5*

Southbridge interfaces the I/O devices, with HDD being the most important to performance among them. If you have atleast 4 GB Dual Channel RAM, I dont think there would be swapping occuring in games which might degrade performance, You might have higher loading times but it shouldnt cause drops after that.
Try disabling your antivirus from scanning your game directories, that might help.

But honestly, I dont think you are going to get much more than that on a HD6850 when playing in Ultra settings. You could try going for a quad core now, although It would be better if you wait for a month or two and get the AMD Bulldozer + 970X Chipset MB if the performance is good or the Intel SNB i5 as it might get some price cuts due to the competition . These might be more than you wish to spend but they should be future proof

If you want a really cheap and temporary solution, get a 2nd hand Q6600 or Q9XX0 and sell off your dual core. Shouldnt be more than a few thousand.

You are getting poor fps cuz your gaming resolution is low. At lower resolution, its the proccy which gets hogged up and the gpu is not used too much. In your case your proccy is holding you back. The same is evident from the fact that your GPU load stays @ 35% in all the games.

I would say bear the low fps for the time being and upgrade your system to sandybridge when you can.
