CPU/Mobo Is quad core overkill?

Was in the market for a laptop. Going through many sites for pointers on any "real" advantage of quad core processor for bbasic tasks - browsing, document creation etc.
There seems to be no consensus. From my personal experience, today's Ajax loaded webpages can bring a C2D to its knees. But there is no evidence that 4 cores will equally take the load of page rendering. So I don't know if a dual core with higher GHz is the better option than a quad core.

Any inputs are welcome.

AMD it will be for sure!

A graphics card also seems unnecessary for the task at hand. But if you have any info on GPU - CPU collaboration for mundane tasks, please enlighten.

Are you talking about the AMD A8/A10 APUs? Those aren't true quad cores.
Very few laptops have quad cores too, and a lot of those aren't able to cope with the heat thrown out and the processor ends up throttling and running as fast as a regular dual core.
