I just got this email from them after I sent my Hard drive in for RMA. The phone numbers mentioned in the email don't even exist. Can someone decipher this coded message for a layman:

As you can see the "Serial No Expected Not Received: 5LR1LM8H" and the "Serial No Received: 5LR1LM8H" are the same. And I don't understand much from the language used in the email but it seems like they're sending it back to me unrepaired because the serial number is not the one they expected. But it clearly is.

Can anyone help me understand this and what should I do regarding it? Also, the correct numbers for Chennai Seagate RMA center beause the ones mentioned here don't work.
 
are you dialing from landline?

if so, then,

91-44-52015161-65 = 044 52015161 / 65

from cell fone..

91-44-52015161-65 = +914452015161 / 65

+ sign is to be added on cellfones.

Ahem, inter-city Landline to Landline calls don't require the local dialing code [in this case 044]

Inter-nation cell phone calls don't require the country dialing code [in this case +91] Although Dialing from cell phone to landline will require you to enter the local dailing code [in this case 044]

Erm did you realise that the number you've written has 10 digits? :P

@OP, Im guessing its the number starts with 4 and not 5. Airtel landlines ealier started with 5 but was changed to 4. Maybe they gave you the old number

So the numbers should be either 42015161,42015162,42015163,42015164 and 42015165

in fact you need to add 0 at the beginning of any cell number outside your local range.

+91 serves the same purpose of 0 in both cell -to-cell and cell-to-landline calls .. one can dial +9144 instead of 044 as well.

have corrected the number.. it is normal 8digit landline number with 61 and 65 as two options.... that is, the same number with last digit as 1 and 5 (alternative)

Thanks for the help guys.

Anyway, as I was told later, the message actually meant that they received my hard disk but found nothing wrong with it and sent it back without repair/replacement.

Now, I had been facing severe problems with this hard drive and half of the time my desktop refused to recognize it (I got a similar result after attaching it to another desktop with different cables too). Chkdsk also found several bad sectors on it, Seatools gave it a "Short DST fail" and even after formatting it several times this behavior persisted.

It is unfortunate that Seagate's RMA division/customer service is so pathetic that they did not even call me before sending it back as it is. It seems that all the effort/shipping money its customers put in for sending it in for RMA does not even warrant a call from them. Moreover, the phone numbers they provided on the email which I quoted above were also non-existent.

I did get a call from someone called Alan Chang in Seagate's Singapore office after I complained about this several times, and he told me that he'd get in touch with the RMA department and get back to me in a week, but it has been 4 weeks and I haven't heard back from him after several email reminders.

The hard drive is still under warranty and is simply occupying space in my file cabinet, but I guess there's no point trying to pursue this further. I've already spent Rs. 200/- on shipping and several hours of my time trying to get a worthless 80 gb hard drive RMA'ed and I'd probably be better off putting in some money and buying a 1 TB SATA hard drive for tension-free extra storage.

Point of this post is: despite having dozens of Seagate hard drives at my home/offices which have always been reliable, I was extremely disappointed the only time I tried to get one of them RMA'ed. I will enter the Western Digital world from now on (or at least till they too disappoint me with their service/product) and avoid Seagate like it is Hepatitis.
