Hey guys, I'll be moving to Chennai in the next week. I'm planning to take a 4BHK rented house/apartment in the Tambaram area . Could you suggest a way without taking help of brokers ?

Yellow pages is your best bet if you don't wanna go via brokers. Accomodation demand runs really high in Chennai, so chances are someone would already have booked an advertised flat before you do. 4 BHK houses / apartments are lesser in number than 3 BHK ones so that might slimmen your chances. Not scaring you dude :)

I would suggest you to take help from your network in Chennai as in colleagues et al so they can spread the word.

PS: Hopefully you are aware of the rental scenario in Chennai. Coming as you are from Kolkata (if I go by your location), you might be in for huge figures, not to mention that pathetic 10 month advance.

Hmm, I thought so. Btw, I won't stay in the city. That is why I hope to find house/apartments within reasonable rent charges ( Ads in Sulekha increase the hope, I just don't wanna go the broker way ).

You can have a look at rent, chennai or 99acres.com . Tambaram is not the heart of the city, but has grown to be a well populated suburb, and so rents are high there too. Not sure about 4BHK ones, but 3 BHKs generally go for around 15K in gated communities. Individual houses are of course lower. There is also this thing that a lot of the property owners like to rent out only to 'vegetarians' or 'brahmins'.

Rest, I would suggest, you would get a better idea once in the city.

try to get a local copy of Free ADS (yellow coloured, Published on THU & SUN) or Tamabaram Talk ( Drop in at every house, SUN) once you reach the city.

+1 for free ads. You'll find more listings in that.I found more brokers online than owners. Also its not uncommon for people to put up "To Let" boards and they don't find it rude if you were to go and enquire. We went looking for a house, didn't like it but found many "To Let" boards on the same street, picked one that looked great and I'm actually staying there right now :p
