i currently have :

1.a pc with a decent graphics card with hdmi output and an onboard sound card capable of spdif..and has analog 7.1 output
2.a 29" tv in my living room which would evidently be shifted in a bedroom.
3.a sony dav dz120k HTIB which i purchased couple of years back.

what i plan to get :
1.32"/37"/40" lcd samsung, by diwali as per the prices at that time

since i am getting a lcd, i was excited about the prospects of having high definition outside my stupid 17" pc lcd. i may see the HD, but i cant hear it as the sony HTIB doesnt have a 6 channel input for sound, only has 2 channel analog input. IT neither has any spdif inputs.

as for the hd, i planned to put my pc in the adjoining room, connect to the tv and HT setup with 30 feet long wires which run from room to room.also with them would be a usb ext. with which i would connect a mce remote.
hence a htpc solution in another room.

so i planned to sell the sony HTIB off and buy the cheapest solution that would suffice for my parents(my availablity after graduation is a doubt..so my parents are going to use the system)

suggestions that i got from here :
1.logitech z5500(though m nt sure how well pc speakers would perform)
2.onkyo hts3100

i think i will get 6-8k for my current HT..which is in excellent condition, from someone.

for the cabling i would need 30 feet long :
1.hdmi wire
2.rca cable - most probably for the spdif..thanks sangram for explaining that
3.usb extension for remote IR receiver.

the pc is actually meant for 2 tasks.

one in my room where i have it with the monitor and keyboard..thats for studies...i could have kept he pc in the other room but then i would have to get a vga cable of 30 feet.

that's why i was thinking of going the other way round.i googled a lot on this and came to the conclusion that 30 feet would be doable for hdmi

30 feet hdmi problems - Google Search
{check the reduser site}

and i hope the same for a coaxial spdif(that is for sound) as well as usb(need this for the remote).

its just that however good lcd screens may be for pc purposes, they cant be better than sittin close enough to a pc monitor(the tv would be large for reading). This setup also gives me an advantage as to work on + somebody else can watch movies on the other screen as well.

i could just run the pc on windows all the time, using the xbmc which IMO looks absolutely fantastic!
just look at this

m attaching a layout of my plan i drew on paint(which looks like a child's art )...
i dont know the cost of the cables yet. As i am in my 3rd of of grad. i dont know about my future. So the system is for my parents primarily. I want it to be hassle free, hence not thinking of another pc. Hence with the lowest cost possible, i want everything to be done.
EDIT : anyone knows where the logitech speakers are for auditioning in delhi, preferably west delhi? Same goes for onkyo. Found just one showroom in delhi from their site and that also in CR park.

You're going to have a tough time keeping jitter low over 30 feet of coax. It may not actually work.

USB is doable, you'll need a powered hub.

For such long connections, you may as well keep the receiver somewhere in the middle and run long speaker wires. It's going to be messy, but it'll work.

A realy good cable would do the job for SPDIF, but we're talking seriously expensive cable here. Look at this one, for example:

EnGenius Coaxial Cable 10M/30 Foot

You may get cheaper options, but that may add noise. Cables are not created equal, and for a short run over a few feet anything could run fine, but over a 10 meter/30 foot run, poor cables will cause reflections and small impedance mismatches get amplified, causing noise, interference or drop-outs.

It's still worth a try. At worst, somebody will get a nice, almost unused 30 foot digital coax cable in the TE market ;)

what about hdmi??30 feet is good enough for that?

Any place in India, Delhi to be specific where one can find a variety of cables?

thanks. U've been of great help. One another possible option is that i buy another mobo like 780g(and then a processor :() with hdmi audio out.

but i suppose there isnt any sub 20K hdmi AV reciever with speakers there in the market.

thanx for that...i just hope this thing m planning works.

btw sangram which r those jbl speakers u planning to audition?

guys does a Hdmi cable cost like 18k for 15m??:S

i read it here..
HDMI cable

i think after that it makes sense for me to buy a separate htpc than to invest 18k in cabling!!

looks like its expensive in india.. i think i would have to get it through KMD.

sangram, have u auditioned the jbl as well? would be nice to have your inputs on my buy..

was thinking of the sony model i told u about..but that again has very few connections. wonder why sony is very miser in providing inputs!
SO evidently its upto the onkyo 3100, onkyo 3105, the logitech z5500, or the jbl combo.I would be going next sunday to croma..a full 20 kms frm my place just to see all these models. I hope they do have em. Else i would have to make another trip 20 kms away to CR park(and then to nehru place as well :)) where i can see only the onkyo.

Relying heavily on your feedback for my purchase.

thanks

JBL is not at Croma for sure.

Croma in Bandra, Mumbai (one of the better ones) had nothing for me. Zilch. Zero. Zappa. I would call ahead if I were you.

The cable would come to about 3K through KMD I guess, and you could scrounge one for a similar price locally.

sangram, have u seen the thread on samsung 40a550? will the input lag affect gaming only or will it make a audio sync problem as well?

http://www.techenclave.com/consumer-electronics/samsung-40-series-5-la40a550-118828.html

Really confused on this. Searched the avsforums as well, couldn't find anything. The dealer near my house had the full variety of samsungs, but none of em had a HT connected. Since i have to connect a PC with the tv for HTPC.. i hope it doesnt affect the audio sync as well.

edit : Sangram, Do keep posting about the new setups that you audition.

A decent receiver should allow you to compensate, it's no big deal or uncommon for entry-level receivers to have audio lag adjustments.
