I bought 5 of these in a medical shop and tried it with a LG dvd RW which is not reading discs properly since a couple of days. So opened the unit and cleaned the lens with this swab which is dipped in Isopropyl alchohol which i came to know is a medical/rubbing alchohol used after injection. But even after that the drive started producing catastrophic errors during reading a DVD.

Now i am doubtful whether this is the right product... In one other shop i came across a surgical spirit, but i am scared to use it. So bought this

Please advice...

you shouldn't use these medical swabs or surgical spirit. they have some tiny amount of water and some disinfectant medicine in them. i've seen them leave some spots behind on glass after drying.
use the Philips dvd lens cleaner. Its an actual dvd with a small brush attached on its surface.

i dont know what price its sells for in the shop but it must be around 150 or so.

But i was told that isopropyl alchohol will do the job for cleaning lens. Is this the thing which was suggested here ?
How to Clean a CD Player Lens | eHow.com

and some other websites ?. OMG i have done this to my working laptop optical drive when sometime back it failed read disks properly and i used a lint free cotton to clean it and it was fine. Now after using this over the laptop ODD nothing has gone wrong when i checked it immediately with a dvd. But now i am scared that it would have damaged the lens

^ That isopropyl alcohol mentioned in the eHow page is 100% alcohol which evaporates without leaving traces or residues behind. The surgical spirit is at most 60-70 percent with rest of it being some distilled water with medicine in it.
You will not get 100% isopropyl alcohol in medical stores. you get it only from places which deal in laboratory goods.

:confused:Then what solution is there to clean the lens manually ?. I just want the solution and not the cd with the brush which has a tendancy to cause further damage to the lens...

The brush can scratch the lens and cause as much damage to the lens as is done by dilute alcohol. So they are basically the same

You mean isopropyl alchohol will damage the lens ? .

the brushes on the Philips dvd cleaner are very tiny and soft like made from some strands of some nylon i guess. i've used it from years, and the only reason my dvd player got spoilt was because of old age. it could still read/write properly before it died. But i admit i dont know whether or not it will leave marks on the lens while cleaning.

You have 2 options as mentioned by others.

1. Lens cleaning CD, Here you can get a Philips OR a Frontech. ( I own a Frontech ).
2. Use Isopropyl Alcohol and use it with ear cleaning buds to clean the lens. I use this method when No. 1 fails.
