Is Windows 7 better than Windows Vista in terms of Security...?

My father's laptop runs a Windows Vista and he uses only the browser and nothing else. Online banking and some accounting in the cloud.

Does he need an upgrade to Windows 7?

Only concern is security. Speed and UI does not matter here. If there is no difference between the two OS in terms of security, he can very well continue using Vista.

Let me know.

TIA.

Dont rely on the OS esp. if its a client OS. Install a reliable updated antivirus and firewall and rest be assured. Though nothing is foolproof, this is the best you can do. And make sure, only shop online on reliable sites. I guess this much is enough to answer all your queries. You use either xp,7 or vista bt follow the mentioned stuff.

Of course I use Kaspersky / BitDefender in all the systems in my home. Apart from that does the OS make a difference?

If you are so paranoid about security then you should consider a firewall as well.

Give Comodo firewall a try. It's freeware and works beautifully.

Let him stick to what he has, and ensure that he does not click on links in any emails which might be malicious.

Use MSE if you want a decent free AV.

Just one suggestion. Create a normal user account for him. create a password for admin account and do not share it. Configure AV and Firewall on system and

Give your father normal account to use. He should be as secure as possible.

Obviously make sure that updates are on and system should have latest updates.

#harish.awe read the fine print Sire, quoted from conclusion of the same --

Built upon the security foundation of Windows Vista, Windows 7 introduces a number of security enhancements to give users the confidence that Microsoft is continuing to find better ways to safeguard users’ IT investments as well as data. Businesses will benefit from enhancements that help protect company sensitive information, that provide stronger protections against malware, and that help secure access to corporate resources and data. End users can enjoy the benefits of computers and the Internet knowing that Windows 7 is using new technologies and features to safeguard privacy and personal information. Finally, all users will benefit from the flexible security configuration options in Windows 7—options that will help users achieve the unique balance of security and usability to meet their specific needs.

^^ It states that most important security features have been placed from a Business / Corporate house point of view not for the average joe, who picks up Windows 7 Home Premium / Home Basic. Apart from that the UAC has been streamlined and the overall efficiency of the whole set up has been boosted [not a great leap over Vista patched with SP1, I conclude].

These are my views and I am open to alternates, so please no flaming. Hope this helps, Cheers!!

Hi,

Yes, its quite understandable that windows 7 is far more better in terms of performance, reliability and security, compared to windows vista. If you have been reading, then you might have already learned that windows vista by all means was a failture accepted by microsoft themself. If you are paranoid about security, best practice buy a legit O/S, get it fully updated with all the security patches and updates, install a decent firewall like ESET smart security suite and make sure that you keep updating the system.
