I would like to know how imp is to have work xp to pursue MBA.Most of the colleges even Top colleges have around 20 to 30 of freshers.

Does doing MBA without work xp does not help a person in his career? Is work xp really needed?

work experience helps and is an added advantage but MBA students in India are mostly freshers or with little work experience so going in fresh into MBA and then working your way up is the mantra followed here.

since competition is getting tougher, good work experience is now being recognized as useful but still, if you get the required marks in entrance and clear the gd pi, you are on similar lines of a person with similar scores with work experience.

Going in for an MBA next month, for work ex, untill you clear cat there is not distinction. At the GD PI stage there are about 10 marks for it, but if your interview goes your way , you might compensate for not having any work ex. I dropped a year, still did not work, got a 0 in all interviews fro the work ex section but in the end cleared 7 out of the 8 interviews i appeared for.

hey, congrats!

can you let us know which 7 did u clear?

d@rK nEmEsIs,

IMO experience will help you a lot...but if u get into top 10-15 straight out of college then go for it eyes closed :)

But experience also differs from person to person..if you get good opportunities to learn and do something substantial for couple of years, it will help you while studying for MBA...you will be able to relate to many of the things. Also, your overall maturity level increases and you respect amount of time and money you invest in MBA course.

Things will make more sense if you the professional management course with work experience coupled.

I passed out from MDI Gurgaon this year. I would say around 1 year experience is perfect unless you want to get into a consulting / IT role. For finance roles, work-ex is not really preferred until it is a relevant one. For marketing also, freshers or people with relevant sales work-experience are preferred. For IT / Consulting you need to have more than 2 years work-ex to get into those kind of roles. Again, I am not saying that people with work-ex don't get finance / marketing roles but they are not that preferred as compared to freshers. E.g. Goldman Sachs has an upper limit of 18 months work-ex when it goes to some B-Schools for hiring summer interns.
