Hi all,
First look at this thread http://www.techenclave.com/forums/75year-old-woman-gets-world-fastest-94475.html

Now while everybody is ho-humming about the awesome download speeds she will get, nobody has talked about upload speeds. I'm sure that would also be awesome in the same breadth (as most of the optical broadband seems to be in the same range Fiber to the premises - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) . also while you are it have a look at this Peter Lothberg's site (STUPI AB) .
A talk/tutorial given by him some years back SPRINTLINK OPTICAL IP NETWORK

Now in our Indian context, how the ISP's are killing innovation is simple. As of now the hardware & software is all available off-the shelf. A basic workstation (an AMD Athlon X2 or Intel Core 2 Duo) with let's say 3 SATA hdd's would set you back by let's say 30-40k (i.e. without stuff like low latency RAM etc. ) just for kicks. The server software could be debian, centOS (www.centos.org - The Community ENTerprise Operating System) , Ubuntu Server edition (Ubuntu Server Edition | Ubuntu) and stuff like that. Domain address stuff is also cheap. The only thing missing in this piece of the puzzle is cheap network connections. Once you have it you also get access to bragging rights like ComputerSims
More importantly you can run any type of service, have a ubuntu or your fav. distro. mirror, run your fav. game server, the list is endless, you are chained back by your imagination & technical expertise & can run virtually any kind of business (legal though) . But with not cheap internet connections only the big guys can play with this stuff (which is sad) as no real parameters can be done with. If they open up, everybody wins including the big boys as more businesses move online & grow big they go to the big boys. Lemme know what you guys think of it. Cheers :)

yeah .. its kinda true.... look @ mtnl and bsnl.. alright they provide 2mbps speeds, its great for home users, but doesnt help any businesses.

and to top it. they use technology that spports 24MBps speeds, and yet all they provide is 2mbps... adsl is not new anyways, by the time they do provide unlimited 24mbps speeds, ADSL2+ will be obsolete.. India will also be behind in terms of broadband connectivity!

^^ they cant even give connections on time to ppl who desperately need it. :(
my wcg crunching at home is at a standstill bcause of lack of a good connection. i cant use a dialup for downloading modules to crunch :@

feel like blasting something :@ :@ :@ aarghhhhhhhh! totally frustated by these ppl at bsnl. 7 months and still havent got a connection here!

Well, there are servers hosted in India. And BSNL/MTNL do offer net connections for these clients.

Draw a dedicated line from the ISP to your rack, and your good to go!

Its 25k/Month for a 1mbps UL conn. iirc :)

I really dont understand the problem of our ISP .. why cant they offer ? where is the cost ? If not mistaken we have all kinda backbone undersea network.Who is eating those bandwidth ? call centers ? or IT companies ?

a good question but not enough answers. Dunno how much of the capacity is truly lit. It might be something like 1-2% which is lit while the rest is waiting to be lit up. WIth the public majors like BSNL & MTNL having all the last mile loop it doesn't seem to be a good scenario :(
Whatever I have seen of Reliance is of wireless (atleast here in Pune), while cable you can get experience of seeing how dial-up really works :(

The point which most people are missing in this discussion is that the internet is about interconnections with the world... the undersea cables comes through singapore and isnt the cheapest interconnections in the world... Look at Hong Kong for instance, it can provide the fastest internet connections coz they are a central hub for all the world's interconnections... The undersea cables which India has is currently just about sufficient... But just imagine if even 0.00001% of India's population wants 2MBps unlimited... how many undersea cables would u require??

My dear sunbiz_3000 I think you misunderstand the capacity of the fibre optic cable. South East Asia Middle East Western Europe 4 and http://www.smw3.com/ for starters. We have few more. Also we are very close to Sri Lanka where lot of submarine cables cross so if want we could get 10 lines both on south east & south west coast . What's lacking here isn't bandwidth its something else, an imaginative mind-set.

You don't have to look much further than the good ol' mobile phone. When call rates were Rs. 16/- (6 yrs. back) & now its Rs.1 & even lower (40 paise anyone) . If it was not dhirubhai ambani who thought of giving connectivity at Rs. 1/- we would be still paying the same kind of rates. The operators streamlined their operations, made investments for scaling up stuff, shared infrastructure where needed (shared telecom towers story, remember anyone), specific low-cost low-power towers designed in India to run on generators for India, outsourced lot of their functionality (bharti airtel) . The list of innovations that competition made both technologically as well as management wise is a study in itself. So unless there is competition there would be no fit people (do know that govt. proposes to put 10% tax on every new TV to bail out DD) & hence we are poorer for it.
