I am using 1TB WD external HDD which is having USB, Firewire and eSATA interface, normally i copy big files like HD movies which carries size of 4 to 16 GB and takes hell lot of time to copy these files using USB or Firewire ports so thought of using eSATA cable, bought one SATA to eSATA cable and connected the SATA side port to my comps motherboard and the other end with eSATA interface connected to HDD and booted the machine but its not showing the HDD in my comp, tried all the options like checking it in BIOS and manually finding the hardware etc nothing seems to be working, even the power on HDD just blinks and goes off which dosent happen with USB or firewire port, if i press the backup button at rear of external HDD the power indication LED just glows continiously, help please.Even i tried another cable and swaping between other free SATA ports.

Is there any external power adapter for the drive or was it drawing power using the USB cable when you had connected the drive via USB?

If the drive does not have any external power connector then the problem you are facing is because of insufficient power.
Do those SATA to eSATA converters really work?
Maybe the SATA cable is not able to transmit the required power to the eSATA cable.

Maybe you should check your drive by connecting the eSATA cable directly to a motherboard or laptop which has eSATA port. But since the eSATA ports on most motherboards and laptop are not powered(not sure. Read something like this on Techtree), you will face the same problem there.

But an eSATA PCI expansion card and check out the performance of your drive.

Or you can try to provide power to the external harddisk via the USB port.
Connect both USB cable and eSATA cable and see if the performance improves or not. The performance may improve if Windows can figure out that a high bandwidth connection is available for data transfer and the USB connection is there only for power.

Yes the HDD runs of external power and all the testings i have done with external power supply it wont work without that. Will check the HDD with friends machine.

there may be a problem with the SATA 2 esata cable or the esata interface of ur external hdd. You can check by connecting ur hdd to a pc having a working esata port on it's motherboard. If it works there then the cable is culprit ( like most of the chinese cables). Further in your BIOS make sure that the sata port you are using to connect to Esata cable is configured as AHCI (and not as IDE).
