NVIDIA's First DirectX 11 Accelerators are GeForce GTX 480 and 470!
A tweet on NVIDIA's Twitter account reveals that the company's first DirectX 11 compliant consumer graphics products will be named GeForce GTX 480 and GeForce GTX 470, against popular opinion that they could make for the GeForce GTX 300 series. The most likely reason for this could be that the company has released mobile graphics products under the GeForce GT 3xx series which are based on its GT21x series GPUs which are DirectX 10.1 compliant. It would be hence easier to make out that DirectX 11 products start in the 400 series.

The two are based on NVIDIA's GF100 GPU which physically has 512 CUDA cores (shader units), a 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, and DirectX 11 compliance. While the GTX 480 is likely the full-featured part, it remains to be seen how NVIDIA carves out the GTX 470 SKU. An enquiry by AnandTech confirmed the authenticity of the Twitter account.

like someone said, its sense to me:D
GT2XXX - DX10
GT3XXX - DX10.1
GT4XXX - DX11:D

whatever it is let them out soon NVIDIA:eek:hyeah::p

what a brilliant idea!!

change the name if you can't deliver on time...!!

why not directly GTX5xx to battle with HD5xxx ?

Nvidia is losing the battle very badly.. Changing names wont help, confirming release dates would.

Though giving thought to the process, whats with directx 10.1? Does it differ so hugely from DX10 that nvidia will have to name a whole new generation??

no they first deny to release dx10.1 cards stating that there are no major improvements over dx10..

then they release GT210 silently for OEMs.. then they release it for retail..

now whole series dedicated to dx10.1 !!

i guess their motive is to compete with existing HD4xxx stock...while still retaining the crown of top performer with ridiculous pricing on GTX4xx(supposedly)

what ever they do as long as there is a price war and constant up-gradation of technology both from Ati and Nvidia Jai Ho !

LOL

nvidia better come out with a topnotch card at attractive pricepoint, otherwise you are screwed
Lots of nvidia loyalists would have already changed to the Red side

this is just to prove that they are still alive in this world. Its been months since there has been any major news about nvidia. So here it is.... and thats what they want.

This really doesn't sound good for Nvidia. The reason why Nvidia is skipping an entire generation is most probably two-fold

1) Yields of the GF100 are pretty bad forcing Nvidia to skip a full generation while saturating the market with re-badged GT2XX parts in a vain attempt to stone-wall the competition. Expect unforgiving prices as well. Hopefully the newer GT3XX will at least be re-spun GT2XX with higher clocks.

2) It sounds as if the flagship models, i.e the GTX480/470, will solely represent the GT4XX generation while occupying their respective positions in the market for quite a while(say 9 months; give or take a few) before Nvidia introduces their DX11 equivalent of the Radeon 57XX.

If there was ever a better time to grow up, get a girlfriend and forget games....then it's now :ashamed:

Nvidia - The Way Its Meant To Be Renamed

Don't you just love Marketing!

Partners to have cards at CeBIT

According to our info, Fermi GTX 480 and GTX 470 names were a last minute change, as even partners were talking about GTX 3xx, but it looks like Nvidia decided to clear up some confusion and went with the GTX 4xx names instead.

The cards should be showcased at Cebit by various Nvidia partners which means that they might get it by the end of February, but as always since we are talking about Fermi here, nothing is certain.

Apparently, the old names for the GF100 were GTX 380 and GTX 360, something that would make sense considering the previous naming history, but as it could create a lot of confusion for the average consumer considering the fact that Nvidia rebranded some old cards as the 300 series, so we guess that this is even better.

On the other hand, we aren't sure why Nvidia decided to go with the GTX 470 and not the GTX 460 name as that would make perfect sense, but this might have something to do with the specification difference between these first cards as, performance wise, they might be quite close to each other.

Of course, the performance numbers are still blurry as Nvidia is keeping these tight under wraps and partners are yet to receive first cards, so things should start to get a bit more clear as we draw closer to the CeBIT show in March.

Fudzilla - Fermi names were last minute change

So we can expect some numbers on march 1st week itself:cool2:. The move from GTX3** to GTX4** is right actually, nothing to mock NV now they are actually done of course a bit late:D

ok we can expect some price wars and so on performance:p
