Hi,

Today I was trying to create a new account on iTunes for myself and register sis's iPod.

I reached the credit card page, and it is rejecting the credit card. The card is working just fine as I just paid my mobile bill. Tried multiple times.

So I called up HDFC CC helpdesk, and guys there told that unless iTunes upgrades itself to add Verified by Visa functionality, we Indians wont be able to use our credit cards anymore from Aug 1st.

I was aware of the implementation of verified by visa, but I honestly didnt think it will be such a problem with iTunes and Apple store ( I was hoping they would have added VBV by now ).

ANyone else facing this problem with cc from other bank?

Yup thats a compulsion now. All Indian online transactions need an extra level of authenticity. So you have to wait until itunes upgrades its authetication process.

Ya, I knew that. In fact I am using Verified by visa for a year now ever since it was introduced as option to users.

I think its time we start bugging apple regarding this on their customer care nos and emails.

I think HDFC has the option of enabling VBV for their cards. so can you try it and post back? Im worried about Tata Sky recharges mainly :)

edit: forget it, just saw your edited posts...

btw, how can itunes be blocking cards... i thot it was the other way around... problem only if the card didnt support VBV but the online merchant required it? i doubt itunes is the problem here, i think its HDFC which worries me... do you have a netsafe account enabled? and did or did not itunes show a VBV prompt to enter credentials?

I've been having trouble with my HDFC card too! Not able to make online purchases via paypal. Called up CC, and they didn't have a proper answer.

yes i have this sneaky feeling its the indian banks that are caught napping and totally unprepared... but shripad posts that he has been using it for a long while already... im still suspicious of hdfc not itunes...

I'm not sure if it's iTunes' problem. Although I've registered long back using card (ICICI), if the new implementation was indeed a problem then I shouldn't have been able to purchase app from App Store (Just bought one app day before yesterday).

Did ur bank inform you regarding updating your account information for VBV? I remember doing it for my ICICI online account recently.

Nope, the itunes never goes to verified by visa page. it takes credit card details and tries to verify the card and then throws an error message " Your Credit card was declined. "

It does not go to verified by visa page at all. All other transactions I am making takes me to verified by visa page. itunes does not.

I made a purchase from ebay.com , paid my bill for mobile and internet after 1st aug. Everything went well except this.

i think the problem is with itunes. itunes is not blocking, but the indian banks will be blocking because itunes is not coming through VBV route.

btw, i recently made a purchase on amazon (before 1 Aug) and they did not even ask for the 3-digit CVV number, but still the transaction went through!

VBV is rather helpful for anyone new on the internet due to its ability to stop bogus sellers to make innocent & new buyers fool. :) But problem for seasoned people like us, now we also need to put a identification code for every transaction through net card. Although its a step in right direction but I feel it will remain an non-convenience for sometime. Hope for the best. :)
